If the three do not align, you are basically wasting both the coach and the teachers time because it is not best for the student, coach, or teacher. There needs to be a clear cut goal to work towards, and this needs to funnel back to what needs to be done for the student.

We want the effort to be a joint effort. Coaches need to be aware of the instructional goals and standards that teachers are trying to meet. We don't need to add more to their plate. We are there to assist them in what they already have to do. We want everyone and everything headed in the same direction...forward.

It is critical to have a connection for all three components because it ensures that is has students as the focus for the goal but it builds on the teachers' strength as well as increasing opportunities for the students to practice. So it still has the students as the ultimate goal. By using the teacher's strengths it builds on those mindframes and where the teacher is in the cycle. In the end you still want the goal to be relevant to what the teacher is supposed to be doing so it has to be tied back into the curriculum or content needs.

All three must be thoughtfully connected in order for coaching to be effective. The coaching conversations will not be helpful without goals specific to each teacher and their students. Also, the last thing a teacher needs is additional work. That's why the coaching and instructional goals should be based in the work they already have to do through curriculum.

The connection is the road map to student success. The coaching goals should support the teacher instructional goal and must address curriculum/content needs. Because if you not address content needs, what are you even doing? The whole purpose is to impact student achievement. I cannot be done if the coaching goal isn't connected to the teaching and content goals.

Q1 You are wanting to set personal goals with teachers, not for teachers. The coaching goal is important because it will drive the teacher. The teacher goal is important because it will drive the students. The curriculum and content needs are important because they are tools used by the coach to show the teacher how to model best practices, which will then lead to the teacher implementing those best practices, which will then lead to students showing growth and learning the intended content and how to apply it and then will show mastery of the standards.
