Important Information

1. It is important for us, as teachers, to work time in for students to read. We have the opportunities to guide their independent reading during lessons.
2. Reading workshops are made of three components, those components are mini- lessons, work time, and share time. This structure helps to support the students through demonstration, guided practice, and individual practice.
3. The mini-lesson is when the teacher teaches to the whole class. Skills, strategies, and behaviors are taught during these lessons.
4. Work time is a time for students to read independently. The students are using the information they learned in the mini- lesson in order to read by themselves. Sometimes, work time can also be done in small groups or pairs. Work time should take up a majority of the reading workshop and the time becomes longer as the students grow in reading.
5. Share time gives students the chance to share what they have learned. They can also share any new skills that they learned and used while reading. This takes the smallest amount of time during a reading workshop and provides a closure to the lesson.
6. Teachers need to teach students how to decode and make connections within the text they are reading. School is the perfect place to give students time to become independent readers.
7. Time is an important aspect in reading as well as a good variety to choose form. It is important that students are given a good range of books to choose from, as not all students will enjoy the same books. It is also important for teachers to help students find what reading they might like.
