In the novel one of the Liars endures prejudice from Cady's family. The Sinclairs do not want her to be with Gat because he is Indian. The Sinclair family, especially Harris Sinclair, the grandfather does not want Gat and his uncle on the island since they are the only non-whites there. He is quite elitist around Gat and Ed. Whenever Gat would discuss how wrong the political viewings of the Sinclairs are he would always get shot down. “’Stop talking now,’ said Mirren. ‘Stop talking, forever,’ said Johnny. … ‘Shut up,’ I said. ‘I’ll give you more chocolate if you shut up.'” Cady responds to this by saying that they do not actually mean what they said. Instead of saying that she should have defended Gat. The characters never attempt to change their ways.

The novel takes place on an elite private island: Beechwood Massachusetts, owned by the narrator's family. On the island, there are four houses: Clairmont, Cuddledown, Red Gate, and Windemere, where the families and kids hang out in. The setting in this book accurately depicts the lifestyle the Sinclairs live and the amount of money they have. Beechwood is where the family spends every summer up until Cady's tragic accident.

The protagonist and narrator in We Were Liars is Cadence Sinclair. At the beginning, she explains how she has suffered a terrible accident and that she is going back to the island to remember. She is quite an unreliable narrator considering she suffers from amnesia. She is telling the story of what happened when she was 15. Cadence, like the rest of the family, is taught to always put a smile on her face even though something might be wrong.

Throughout the novel, it is depicted that the Sinclairs have it all; elaborate houses and private boats. Although, there is one thing they don't have: happiness. The aunts are always fighting over money and constantly trying to suck up to their grandfather to get the most money out of him when he dies. The teenagers on the island are sick of all the constant fighting and start to rebel, but they may take this a little too far.
