Week 4 Story Telling and Story Making

In week 4 we explored the topic of story telling and story making in the classroom.

I discovered story telling was much more than reading a book but using my imagination, developing the right skills to speak and listen in a certain way.

It was important to understand the role teachers had as story tellers; we had to model, we shared stories, encourage students to think about the emotional importance of a story and how they learn through a story;
- listening to a story
-drawing story map to show sequencing

and most importantly how to tell a story! matching our tone with what is happening in a story (I am guilty with reading in a monotone voice), effective pauses, gestures and EYE CONTACT!

I found week 5's lesson very interactive and informative as a pre-service teacher as it gave a huge insight of the proper way to story telling, how to make in intriguing by reading in a certain tone and eye contact as well as activities for student's to do to recap the story such as sequencing.

Week 5 Improvised and Processed Drama ; Teacher in Role

In week 5 the topic was improved and processed drama; to how a teacher was able to play 'Teacher in Role'

The learning of for week 5 focused on how children can be creative thinkers, utilising, their imagination and generating new ideas.

In addition to TiR; it is a complex form of improvisation where the classroom teacher plays multiple roles and may use 'trigerring devices' such as a specific clothing item, pitch and tone of voice.

I remember breaking up into groups to create multiple scenes and then going into a freeze frame. The activity focused on collaboration and imagination, which is a great way to get students to work together.

The freeze frame activity was a new concept as I did not remember doing it in Primary school, it was a fun way to see how group work and collaboration can make a great performance. This is an activity I will definitely take into the classroom for older years to use creativity and utilising collaborating!

Week 6 Introduction to Dance

Week 6 was the first week that online classes commenced due to COVID-19; however with the use of internet learning was not compromised.

In the new module we were to learn confidence in facilitating dance experiences fir primary students and how to get them to participate, as well as developing personal dance skills.

In dance; it comes to making and responding. We make dances by improvising, choreopgraphing, practising and then rehearsing to perform whilst we respond to how we view, describe, reflect and analyse the dance.

We also learn the acronyn BEST; Body, energy, space and time

In the class we learnt and practiced ways to warm up for a dance (suitable for Primary school aged children).

In addition, we explored the body and how we should be body aware, body parts, body zones and the locomotor and non-locomotor movements.

We also went through the benefit of dance experiences in Primary school such as; it helps develop physical and social skills, express emotions, allows the development for creativity and understanding social, cultural and historical contexts.

Dance was never a large part in my primary education, I feel like a lot of children do enjoy dance but often don't get the opportunity to; by bringing it more in a school environment it would benefit children a lot as mentioned. I do remember the one time where dancing was bought into the school which was in Year 7 which went on for a whole term every Period 5 on Tuesday in preparation for the Year 7 ceremony that held as our graduation; Everyone enjoyed it and it was definitely a great way to have socialised with the other year 7 class.

Week 11 - Creating a performance with primary students

In week 11's learning it was about creating a peformance!
This made me remember primary school assemblies where the whole class got involved.

An important decision to make as a teacher is to determine if the student's are ready to perform and if they are; good things to consider are what they would perform such as:
- simple action songs
- poems
- readers' theatre
- scripted or devised play
- movement based; such as a dance

When creating a performance the process is very important to consider; through brainstorming ideas, finding a symbol / virtue to display in the performance, rehease and refining.

A performance will bring many elements of art such as media arts when designing props or costumes! As well as the audio being used and the dance aspect of drama i.e. a choreography
