Harmony is the arrangement of notes in such a way that it’s pleasing to hear. These usually come in forms of chords or chord progressions. Some of these chords have a more dissonant note in them which gives them a tense feeling, but sounds “finished” when followed by a consonant chord. The word “harmony” comes from the Greek term “ἁρμονία harmonia” which means joint or agreement. This plays an important role in music as without it, there will be a lack of order or feeling in the music, and the notes will sound chaotic.

1. The purpose of form in music is to create a sense of unity and make a song feel ordered and memorable. It's highly common in songs that need to be sung, marches, waltzes/dances and symphonic works. However it is also used to convey a certain idea or emotion. Such as a movie score or a Symphonic Poem.
2. Facts about music. Digital revenues were 77 percent of the total music industry in the first half of 2016. Streaming was 47 percent of the U.S. music industry revenue in the first half of 2016. Americans spend more than four hours a day listening to music.
3. Every piece of music has an overall plan or structure, the “big picture,” so to speak. This is called the form of the music. Most listeners will quickly grasp the form of a short and simple piece, or of one built from many short repetitions.

Texture is the thickness and density of a piece and also the layers and amount of instruments that are found in the piece of music at any point in time. The more the amount of instruments, the thicker the texture. Texture is actually a very important part of a piece of music as it determines whether a part of the music is solo or orchestral. The texture can always work with dynamics to produce impact on the audience; either strong or light music. Interesting Fact! There are actually many different types of texture in music: monophonic (which was discovered in 400AD), polyphonic (which was discovered in 1450), homophonic (which was discovered in 1750) and lastly holophonic (which was discovered in 1950). I feel this is extremely interesting and fascinating.

Rhythm is an ordered recurrent alternation of strong and weak elements in the flow of sound and silence in speech. A good rhythm is always imperfect. There are 3 elements to rhythm: tempo, content and quality. There are 5 types of rhythm: random rhythm, alternating rhythm, random rhythm, flowing rhythm, and progressive rhythm. Rhythm keeps a song moving along, it gives motion. It can also help make a song feel slower or faster than it's actual pulse, or create a sense of groove. Sometimes alternating rhythms are used for dramatic effect.

Texture is how the tempo, melodic and harmonic materials are combined in a composition, thus determining the overall quality of the sound in a piece. Musical texture can be used by composers to create drama and contrast by differences in the layers of sound, whether melody or harmony, the relations between these layers of sound, and how many layers there are. The common types of textures are monophonic, biphonic, and polyphonic. With the evolution of electronic media in the late twentieth century, entirely new ways in which textures could be created emerged. Mario Davidovsky (b. 1934) was a pioneer in the realm of electronic media utilization in music and won a Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1971 for one of his electronically based compositions.

Dynamics is the volume of a sound or note, how loud or how soft the sound or note. An interesting fact is that dynamics markings are based on Italian words. The piano was originally called a “pianoforte” with piano meaning soft and forte meaning loud as the piano can play dynamics. The main dynamics are thus p and f, p being piano and f being forte. Dynamics sustain variety and interest in a musical importance. Without dynamics, it will not sound nice. They help to express an emotion through volume and intensity. For instance, a loud sound can mean a person is angry. Another fact is that dynamics are relative, they cannot be measured exactly and do not refer to specific volume levels.

The direct definition of tempo is the rate of speed the musical piece is being played. For example some words regarding tempo include: ritardando which is the slowing down of the speed and accelerando which is the acceleration of the speed. Tempo is the underlying beat of the music. Just like a heartbeat, tempo is also known as the ‘pulse’ of the music. Without tempo, the music would be disorganised as the speeds of each beat is not synchronised. Thus tempo is an important element in arranging a music piece as it controls the speed of the piece so it will be less chaotic.

Dynamics is the variation of loudness in a piece of music. Dynamics does not only affect the loudness and softness of the music. A musician would often use a different approach to other aspects of expression like timbre or articulation or even tempo to further illustrate the differences of dynamics on different instruments. It is important to control dynamics and tempo independently. Just because the music is getting louder, does not mean you have to go faster. In dynamics, forte means loud and piano means soft. Dynamics has special features such as crescendo which means “increasing”, decrescendo which means “decreasing” and diminuendo which means "diminishing".

Melody is the sequence of notes that is musically satisfying. It is also known as a tune. Melody has a melody motion to it and is one of the most important elements to music. Without melody, the song will only have rhythm and the beat, and it will be less interesting. There are some songs that seem to have no melody but actually, they have a melody, just that the melody is not the emphasis. In such songs, like Frith of Fifth by Genesis in 1973, the song is has a stronger rhythm and time signatures, making up for the melody. The oldest melody was discovered in the 1950s, it was about 3400 years old.

The texture in music is the overall quality of the sound produced by different forms of instruments. It is also the number of layers or how thick or the sound is. The most common form of texture in music, especially western and classical music, is the homophonic texture, which has a melody and a background accompaniment. With that being said, there are also many other forms of texture such as, monophonic and polyphonic texture.

Form refers to the structure of a musical composition. Some examples of common forms are strophic (AAA), binary (AB), ternary (ABA) and rondo (ABACA) or (ABACABA). A part is represented by a letter (A,B,C or more if needed) and a part has a certain rhythm and tune that always stays the same throughout a piece. For example, a song with a strophic form (AAA) will have a repeated tune over and over again throughout the whole song. An example of a song with a strophic form is “Mary had a little lamb”. Although the lyrics are different, the tune of the songs is repeated throughout the entire song. If a part is different from an (A) part, it is then considered a (B) part. And if there’s another part that’s neither (A) Nor (B), it is a (C) part and so on. Form is important as it makes a song feel ordered and memorable. Songs that are sung, for dancing or marching usually have form.

A tempo is the speed of the beat in a song. Some songs can alternate between tempos. Without a tempo, the song would not have a beat. It can be measured in Beats Per Minute (BPM). There are many words to describe the speed of the tempo. Some examples are “accelerando “ which means faster bpm and “adagio” which means slower bpm. A fact about tempo is that before the year 1600, there was no symbol to describe a tempo. The tempo of a song can help the Composer and the listener to feel relaxed or tensed, depending on how fast or slow it was.

Texture is how the tempo, melodic, and harmonic materials are combined in a composition,it also determines the overall quality of the sound in a piece. It is often described in regard to the density, or thickness, and range, or width, between lowest and highest pitches, in relative terms.A thick texture contains many 'layers' of instruments. The thickness also is changed by the amount and the richness of the instruments playing the piece. The thickness varies from light to thick. A piece's texture may be changed by the number and character of parts playing at once, the timbre of the instruments or voices playing these parts and the harmony, tempo, and rhythms used .The types categorized by number and relationship of parts are analyzed and determined through the labeling of primary textural elements.
