The remote (likely to be online) aspect might be used for providing input (eg flipped classroom) or for student output and in particular student collaboration. I have recently started to use shared files on One Drive to encourage students to work together, which might be on brainstorming ideas for a project/presentation, sharing ideas from what they've read, or creating pieces of collaborative writing. If I want to see what they are doing I create the shared files myself, which allows me to follow the process, and helps me identify areas we might need to look at in a face-to-face session. By combining this with face-to-face lab demonstration, the students can access learning resources online and in person at the same time.

My understanding of bleneded learning is that it integrates both classroom-based pedagogy/activities with autonomous/on-line activities. The aim behind it is to provide students with more opportunity to learn autonomously/with other students in an engaing and interactive way.
