In one module requiring personal reflective writing, I've found the combination of online journal and in-person workshops really effective for both academic and pastoral support. Some students seem to find voicing concerns and issues easier in an online space, which I can pick up on in seminars and workshops.

The online content can be used to allow students to prepare prior to traditional teaching, reinforce learning, or to provide additional material. The approach should permit students to take ownership of their learning, but my experience of this approach to date has been mixed at best.

Blended learning is the use of both online and classroom resources for teaching, preferably so that they complement and supplement each other. As many other people who have posted here have done, I've got my students to complete VLE journals. My decision to use them was partly based on an oddity of my module's timetabling. The film screening was timetabled for after the seminar, so I asked students to post their reactions to the film in the journal. But I actually like the way that it gives students a chance to reflect on what they've studied that week and receive feedback from me, so I've decided to keep it as a feature of the module.

I understand blended learning to be the use of a complementary combination of remote and classroom based approaches to learning. The remote (likely to be online) aspect might be used for providing input (eg flipped classroom) or for student output and in particular student collaboration. I have recently started to use shared files on One Drive to encourage students to work together, which might be on brainstorming ideas for a project/presentation, sharing ideas from what they've read, or creating pieces of collaborative writing. If I want to see what they are doing I create the shared files myself, which allows me to follow the process, and helps me identify areas we might need to look at in a face-to-face session. I have done similar things with padlet, although I find it a little unwieldy for some activities.
