Little kids love a good Dr. Seuss book as it helps with their rhyming skills. Children in grades K-2 love a good Dr. Seuss book.

Frederick and his friends are gathering food as winter is coming but while his friends do all the work, Frederick is being perceived as a slacker as he's gathering "sun rays, colors, words" and his friends are confused. As winter arrives and food runs low, they begin to ask for Frederick's supplies, and he shakes the table and proves he's a poet with his words and their hearts are filled with warmth and imagination. A great picture book for grades 1-4! This book is interesting because it teaches kids that everything given to us is beneficial.

Date finished: 9/11/19
Genre: Fiction
Category: Picture book
The setting takes place in a big snowy city in and begins in main character Peter's bedroom, as he awakens to discover that snow has fallen during the night. He celebrates this day by putting on his red snow suit after breakfast and heading outside for an adventure. When he gets outside he finds snow that is piled high. Peter makes a snowman, snow angels, and pretends to be a mountain climber. As Peter discovers these new ways to enjoy the snow he encounters issues and learns how to deal with the changing problems that confront children as they grow up. For instance, when Peter first makes his way out of the house he comes across older kids having a snowball fight. Peter about four years old realizes that he should not try to join in on this activity with bigger children when he is knocked down by a stray snowball. A great read because it was the first picture book to feature an African-American main character, this short, simple story attracts readers of all ages. It is a great text especially for beginner readers.

He then begins a magical journey, in which his room transforms into a new world, with creatures named the Wild Things, where he is soon made king. Max is in control of his life in the land of the Wild Things, but soon finds himself homesick and yearning to go back home to eat his mother's supper. A great book because kids can relate to this idea of freedom and imagination since their lives are mainly controlled by adults.

Date finished: 9/14/19
Genre: Fiction
Picture: Picture book
One Sunday morning, a caterpillar hatches from an egg. He is known as the Very Hungry Caterpillar, who loves eating, and so he begins to look for some food. He eats through increasing quantities of fruit on the following 5 days (Monday through Friday). First it's one apple on Monday, then two pears on Tuesday, three plums on Wednesday, four strawberries on Thursday, and finally, five oranges on Friday. On Saturday, he eats an enormous amount of food (which in reality is not for caterpillars but rather being human food). Then that night, he gets a stomachache from overeating (from all of those 6 days; Monday through Saturday). But the next morning, it becomes Sunday again. The caterpillar ate through one green leaf. And after that, he feels much better. At the end of that, he is not hungry anymore. He is neither hungry nor a little caterpillar. He is a big, fat, caterpillar. The now-big caterpillar spins a cocoon around himself. In order to find out what's next, read the rest of the book! One of the best books for children!

During a playground trip, “Mommy and I go round and round,” on a playground wheel that resembles a giant birthday cake; on the opposite page, “Mama and I slide to the ground.” The bright colors (a green claw-foot tub has froglike feet) and pleasing verse offer a simple lesson about love that same-sex parents should embrace. A positive look at LGBTQ families, these are great books for kids with two moms or two dads, as well as for kids who could benefit from seeing a different kind of family structure. I loved this book!

Date finished: 10/1/19
Genre: Non-fiction
Category: Picture book
Based on the true story of Philippe Petit, a French street performer living in New York City who specialized in tight rope walking, the events occurred in 1974. Petit decided that he wanted to walk from one of the towers of the World Trade Center to the other. At that time the towers were still under construction, so Petit and a friend dressed up as construction workers and managed to bring a 440-pound spool of cable to the roof of one of the towers. With the help of two additional friends on the opposite tower, they connected the cable from one tower to the other. Early on the morning of Aug. 7, 1974, Petit spent an hour at 1,340 feet in the air, walking and performing from one of the twin towers to the other. While the text is strong and appealing, the poetry is in the illustrations, so clear, glorious, and powerful that this could almost be a wordless book.

Date finished: 10/7/19
Genre: Non-fiction
Category: Picture book
I LOVE THIS BOOK! This book tells the story of how Ruth Bader Ginsburg rose to become a Supreme Court justice. Born into a Jewish family in 1930s Brooklyn, she grew up when girls were expected to raise families but not participate in the workforce, and encountered prejudice against Jews and other minorities. But Ruth's mother supported her ambitions and education, and Ruth went on to attend law school, where she met her husband and started a family, sharing household and child-rearing duties, an unconventional arrangement at the time. This bio of Justice Ginsburg is supremely inspiring, breaking down complicated ideas about the constitution, legal system, and issues of equality for young readers while celebrating Ginsburg's life.

While he stayed committed to his love of words and poetry, Williams knew he had to make a living, and so he studied medicine to become a small town pediatrician and obstetrician. He continued to write even as house calls and infant arrivals ate into his creative time. Beautifully illustrated, the book uses Williams' own poetry throughout to help kids get a sense of the way he constructed his poetry and incorporated his creative life into his day-to-day work.

Listen, dear reader, to Kate DiCamillo, and you will hear of Despereaux Tilling, a half-sized mouse with giant ears who is "such the disappointment" to his mama because he won't act like other mice. He is sickly, faints at loud noises, loves music, bright light, and reading books. Worst of all, because he has fallen in love with a human princess named Pea, he talks to humans. For this transgression he is condemned by the other mice, including his own father, to be sent to the dungeon to be eaten by the rats. You will also, dear reader, hear of Roscuro the rat, who also loves light, but has a grudge against the princess. And of Miggery Sow, an abused, dimwitted, partially deaf serving girl who wishes to be a princess. And you will hear how the strange stories of these three outsiders intersect in a most unusual way. Absolute great book!

The Hunger Games is a story about a reality show where 24 teens must kill one another until only one survives. The book is set in the future, after the United States is gone. In its place is Panem, in which the city of Capitol, somewhere in the Rockies, rules over 12 rebellious districts. To maintain an iron grip, the Capitol holds an annual televised reality show, a lethal form of Survivor to which each district must send one boy and one girl. Out of these 24 teens, only one will survive.

Date finished: 11/25/19
Genre: Fiction
Category: Chapter book
This was a book I had to dig out the archives! I used to bowl as a kid so reading this book was even more enjoyable! These two characters, Ouchie and Squishy, love bowling, even if it isn't the coolest sport. And their favorite place to bowl is Bowl-A-Rama. Squishy especially likes it because it's the perfect setting for a gory horror movie. Then again, he tends to imagine zombies and killer clowns around every corner. When the city council wants to condemn the decrepit bowling alley, Ouchie and Squishy are devastated. Then the boys meet Gazebo Zamboni, the rich, reclusive, totally nutty owner of Bowl-A-Rama. Despite Mr. Z's insistence that the world is ending soon-a ghost told him so-Ouchie and Squishy manage to convince Mr. Z to keep Bowl-A-Rama open. He allows the boys to restore the old alley, and even sponsors a million dollar strike contest to bring in customers. Just when things start looking up, the most nightmarish scenarios of Squishy's overactive imagination come to life. Someone-or something-wants Bowl-A-Rama's doors to close. Forever. It is a great book filled with mystery! Highly recommend this book!
