Issued the Emancipation Proclamation to free slaves in confederate states and fought to pass the 13th amendment to abolish slavery. He originally only cared about preserving the Union by any means necessary, but supposedly his views changed and by the end of his life he was a supporter of racial equality and black suffrage.

Mary Todd Lincoln

Portrayed by Sally Field. Though her family owned slaves and several of her brothers fought in the Confederate army, she was against slavery. She obviously did not hold any government positions, so she didn't have a direct impact on slavery, but she held strong unwavering support for her husband in all of his endeavors.

Portrayed by Tommy Lee Jones. A Republican congressman and lawyer. A passionate and adamant supporter of black rights and racial equality for decades. Didn't get along well with Abraham Lincoln as he thought his plans for abolition weren't extreme enough and his support was lackluster.

Portrayed by David Strathairn. Secretary of State during the Civil War, former senator and governor of New York. A close colleague and friend to Lincoln, he was a strong supporter of abolition. As the Secretary of State, he managed international affairs during the war and helped instate the Lyons-Seward Treaty to end the Atlantic Slave Trade.

Ulysses S. Grant

Played by Jared Harris. Commanding General of the Union Army who later went on to become the 18th President. Heroically fought through many defining battles and led the Union to victory. As president he signed the Civil Rights Act of 1875, outlawing racial discrimination in public spaces and worked hard to pass the 15th amendment, giving black men the right to vote.

Portrayed by Hal Holbrook. An American journalist and the founder of the Republican Party. Even though he owned slaves he eventually grew to be against the further expansion of slavery and worked to preserve the Union. He wasn't really a big supporter of Civil Rights but he was a big supporter of Lincoln and served as his advisor during the Civil War.

Portrayed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The eldest son of Abraham Lincoln. He had just recently graduated from Harvard when his father was assassinated. Although it was against his parents wishes, he desperately wanted to fight in the Union army and enlisted during the end of the war. He went on to become a successful lawyer and served as the United States Secretary of War.

Portrayed by James Spader. An attorney and journalist. He was a lobbyist, or an advocate for the 13th amendment. The lobbying group was organized by William Seward who he worked closely with. Helped convince many Democrats to vote in favor of the amendment. But apparently he wasn't very important because there's no photograph of him.

Portrayed by Lee Pace. A Democratic congressman, merchant, and mayor of New York City. He was one of the strongest opponents of the 13th amendment and kept trying to delay and block the vote. He was involved in a lot of corrupt business practices and nobody really liked him.
