My interviewees.....

I was able to speak to a parent, a general education teacher and a special education teacher, who, in addition to being in a self-contained room, was also a co-teacher for different subjects. I wanted to include a parent to get an understanding about how they would feel about co-teaching, especially if their student wasn't in a special education program or had an IEP. It was also important to hear from a general education teacher to see how he/she felt about having a special education teacher "push into" their classroom. It made sense to me to speak with a special education teacher as well, their input in collaboration and consultation is important.

The concept of Collaboration

The overlying theme with all three was the concept of teamwork. Whether it was working with a special education teacher or general education teacher, the goal was positive results and achieving success. The important characteristics were an open mind, positive social skills and leaving emotion out of it. While the parent was concerned with the best outcome for their child, being too emotional was considered a detriment. Benefits included learning new skills and methods. The potential barriers included personal differences and closed mindedness. Personality clashes seem to be something that happens on occasion between teaching colleagues. Communication and openness were most important to the interviewees and the comfort level seemed high. The special education teacher looked forward to working with other teachers and parents. A non-hostile environment, along with willingness to communicate is important to collaboration, they also wanted time to prepare and seemed open to collaborating in the future. They didn't seem to believe that courses prepared them fully. Working with colleagues was the best way to prepare for working with colleagues.

Co-teaching

I was interested to hear what a parent would feel about co-teaching. They felt that even though their student wasn't a special education student, hearing things from another point a view from a different teacher could help them. Co-teaching for the teachers was working together as a cohesive unit, breaking down concepts to smaller pieces for all students, not just some. They felt that being laid back and being able to observe were important. Bouncing ideas off of each other and being cohesive were benefits, while being overconfident and not embracing the co-teaching delivery were detriments. Communication and working as a team were key, while comfort level depended on the person. The people involved can make it a challenging experience. A relaxed atmosphere that's open to change seem to be good conditions and time to collaborate are key. The likelihood of collaboration in the future depends on the situation, the student makeup, but they were open to it. They both seemed prepared by school for co-teaching.

Consultation

Consultation, was defined as working closely and communicating with coworkers, parents and administration on curriculum. Hearing all possible opinions, humility and seeing a different way and embracing it being benefits, while stubbornness and having a close mind are the potential barriers. The skills necessary, humility, willingness to listen and the ability to adapt. The comfort level has increased with the interviewees but all were willing to be involved. Calm and relaxed conditions are necessary, with being able to listen. Best preparation seems to be time, scheduling and an outline for discussion that makes the best use of time. All are likely to engage in consultation and they are somewhat prepared by college courses.

The theme of these concepts and the feelings of the interviewees seem to be openness, listening and preparation. They all seem to want a relaxed atmosphere to hash out new concepts and methods to get the best out of their students, whether as a parent or a teacher. The lines of communication have to be open for all and scheduling should occur to discuss all issues, and not just when negative things occur.
