The reason the mood contrasts so quickly is because when the scorpion is spotted especially around a baby where a scorpion bite can cause death it  causes a lot of tension and then the tension rises even more when the scorpion stings the baby and they need a doctor immediately or the baby could potentially die. The at the highest point of tension I believe is in the chapter is when the doctor would not care for the baby.
