Create an easy to remember set of specific rules for student discussion. Teach these rules and reinforce them before every discussion including a reward for individuals or groups or whole class if rules are followed correctly during each discussion.

If students take notes digitally, but tend to take very poor notes, add an activity for students to do after the notes that requires the correct notes to complete correctly. Require the students to complete the activity and check their answers with teacher to encourage them to add to and correct their notes along the way.

The Socratic seminar was a great strategy to help encourage student discourse in our classrooms. I would also like to add “Stand, share, sit” technique too, so it keeps talkative ones limited and the quiet ones accountable to speak at least once. Then, you could open up the floor to everyone again. I also love how the students would be the ones guiding the discussion and learning.

Stand, share, sit. I am firm believer that students have to move in some way about every 10 minutes. I myself have a hard time sitting in the same spot for more than an hour so I don’t expect my students to do that every single day as well.

I enjoy using Socratic seminars (full seminar). I have small groups of kids that are pulled out and once conversation starts, students really participate and contribute to all conversation. The full seminar also allows my students to utilize fidgets while they speak which helps with anxiety. This works for my students because they need to move and will speak and process the more they are allowed to move.

I have a hard time with this strategy in IPC especially finding how this would work with chemistry or physics bundles. I think using it as a way to breakdown questions and then finding questions to help answer the questions. Would like to try and find a way to use this to test during a bundle. I like that they are all prepared with questions or something to say and then everyone has to speak once.

I asked how often should you change Pedagogical activities during a lesson

I was told they become less effective after 15 minutes so during a normal class and lesson there should be about 3 for it to be most effective

This is awesome because the students who aren’t participating still have a job to do, which is to listen and get ready to talk. During my experience being a student I knew that when I was going to have to participate, it was nice to have time to formulate a response. IMO, this is great for tackling the listening and speaking need at our campus. You can’t get better at something without practicing it.

I am looking forward to doing Socratic seminars with my on-level classes this year. I’ve been blessed with some great mentorship in how to do them, and now know that vetting the questions first (to eliminate repeats and nonsensical questions) is vital to the smoothness of the seminar overall. It definitely takes practice — as much for the students as the teacher, but it will get better and better each time, I promise!

We on numerous occasions use the Stand, Share and Sit activity since we are primarily proficiency based language. We want them speaking the language so we do a lot of student discourse that helps them be brave in the target language. It gets them to move around and not just sit in their chair for 50 minutes.

The use of padlet allows for communication for those that are able to write/type their questions and thoughts without having to share out and be embarrassed. It allows for them to think of their ideas and using others thoughts and ideas.

I liked the list making and then making groups larger and larger as you go to get the kids engaged in a smaller group and more the speed of their comfort level prior to having to discuss with the larger group. I think some really bright kids don’t say things that would be positive towards the discussion but don’t say anything because of the fear of public speaking and being center of attention.
