1. Ordinary World

Westley is a humble farm boy in love with Buttercup. He works on her family’s farm and always replies with, “As you wish.”

2. Call to Adventure

Westley decides to seek his fortune so he can marry Buttercup. He leaves for America (or, in the film, sets sail), but is reported killed by the Dread Pirate Roberts.

3. Refusal of the Call

Buttercup, believing Westley is dead, is devastated and refuses to love again. Westley, presumably, could have accepted death or anonymity—but he doesn’t.

4. Meeting the Mentor

Westley’s mentor is an unusual one: the Dread Pirate Roberts himself, who spares him and eventually passes on the identity. Westley learns how to fight, survive, and lead.

5. Crossing the Threshold

Westley returns (disguised as the Dread Pirate Roberts) to rescue Buttercup, who is now betrothed to the evil Prince Humperdinck. He literally crosses into the Fire Swamp—a point of no return.

6. Tests, Allies, and Enemies

Allies: Inigo Montoya and Fezzik (eventually)

Enemies: Vizzini, Count Rugen (the six-fingered man), Humperdinck

Tests: Sword fight with Inigo, wrestling Fezzik, the battle of wits with Vizzini, surviving the Fire Swamp, being tortured to "mostly dead"

7. Approach to the Inmost Cave

Westley is captured, tortured, and dies (sort of). The "Inmost Cave" is literal—the Pit of Despair.

8. Ordeal

Westley faces death and actually dies—but is brought back to life by Miracle Max. This is the ultimate trial, symbolising sacrifice and rebirth.

9. Reward (Seizing the Sword)

Westley revives and reunites with Inigo and Fezzik. Inigo gets his revenge; Westley rescues Buttercup and outwits Humperdinck.

10. The Road Back

The group escapes the castle. Westley doesn't get a peaceful return just yet—he's still recovering, and the threat of pursuit remains.

11. Resurrection

Westley, fully alive again (emotionally and physically), faces Humperdinck and defeats him without violence. He also shows the transformation from farm boy to legend.

12. Return with the Elixir

Westley rides off with Buttercup, Inigo, and Fezzik. Love is restored. Inigo finds peace. The story ends with “happily ever after”—plus a few nods to storytelling itself via the grandfather reading to his grandson.
