As stated in the first law of Kepler, the direction of the Earth orbiting the Sun is not constant. Therefore, it changers/varies through out the year.

However, during winter, the Earth is tilted away from the Sun. This results in a wide spread of the sunlight. The sunlight spreads over a larger area, leading to less intense heating and cooler temperatures.

During the summer, the Earth is tilted such that the hemisphere we in receives more direct sunlight. Due to the tilt of the Earth's axis, the sunlight is more concentrated on a certain area, where intense heat could be felt.
