The Union versus the Confederacy, or the North versus the South,

and even brother versus brother, the Civil War was a brutal and important

event in the History of the United States. Museums are a way to become

immersed within a time during history and bring visitor's imaginations to life by

becoming part of an event in history. As historians (which all of you are in my class)

we have been assigned to create a museum of the most important and influential

battles of the Civil War. Not every bit of information about the battles in the Civil

War are extremely interesting but we have to find things to captivate our audience

and explain the key points of each battle.

Your group (4-5 students) will each be assigned a specific battle, which may be

considered important or turning points of the Civil War. You may choose to either

create a power point, a prezi, or a padlet presentation to explain your groups battle

to the class. (remember we are visitors to your museum so try and draw our attention

and make us feel as though we attended the battle as spectators) Be sure you include

artifacts (pictures, paintings, letters, or primary documents), timeline, outline of the

battle, key figures or leaders, casualty count, events leading up to the battle and after

the battle, as well as the victor.

1. In your groups, find and research the interesting artifacts you wish to

include in your museum presentation. Each member should have one or more

artifact in which they become professionals on.

2. Each artifact included must be explained (who, what, when, where, why) by the

professional of that artifact. (this does not need to be in a slide or part of your

presentation but you must explain it thoroughly to the class)

3. Work together in creating the timeline, outline, key figures and leaders, as well as

the events leading up to and after the battle.

4. Each student will submit their own research of their artifact in 2-3 paragraphs at the

end of their group presentation. You need to include the 5 W's (who, what, when,

where, why) and what is it about the artifact do you think is important, why you think it

should be included in the museum, and what is it that will draw visitors of the museums

attention to your artifact.

5. Each student will also turn in one paragraph on the participation of the other members

of the group, how well or if this activity worked for you, and what could be done differently.
