During my middle school years, I spent lot of time on a social media site called Tumblr. On Tumblr, a lot of the people I interacted with supported a minds that of depression, self-loathing, and high dislike for others. A mindset that made it likeable to have a mental illness and dislike people who didn’t have thebes exact same views as you did about the world made it seem like I too would be liked if I had depression. Phrases like “I hate myself” and “I’m worthless” were the norm in the community, and were usually passed off as a “relatable joke.” This eventually did give me depression, and I found it hard to cope with my life and my friends outside of Tumblr. Eventually, I realized the toll that the community was taking on me, and I left it. Now that I’ve left and surrounded myself with positive words and friends who support me, my mindset has greatly improved, and my mental health is very good.

Influences like media (9), advertising (10), school (10), and the law (11) impact what a teenager thinks is cool and right. Some advertisements, like those for smoking, make drug abuse and smoking seem cool and hip, creating the idea that you will be cool if you smoke. Now a days, the dea of smoking being cool has gone away, mostly because people end up with poor health and smell very bad. Before, however, advertisements for smoking ruled a lot of teenagers’ lives and made them pay the price of giving into peer pressure of in place by the media, dropping their grades, greatly decreasing their health, and getting addicted to nicotine.

A “norm” is a popular trend among a group of peers or a community that has been in place for a very long time, and the vast majority of the individuals in that group adhere to it. A norm in my community is helping others and getting good grades.
