Shanna as a Student of Social Studies Education by Shanna

All through elementary school, Social Studies never really appealed to me, until I had a 7th grade History teacher who was so enthusiastic about the topic. He made the whole class excited to learn. The topics became very interesting to me and I began to enjoy Social Studies more. My senior year of high school I loved my Government class. I learned so much from that teacher. I took an online course about History in college. The book that was required talked all about historical American events, but it included all sorts of interesting facts that aren't normally covered in a History class. All of the events I had already learned about, but this book talked about the other side of the story that is usually left out. It really sparked my interest in American History again.

I aspire to become the best teacher I can be for my students. My goal is to make learning fun and easy for all. My students will not particularly like every subject, but I hope to find a way to relate it to their lives. If they have a reason to care about the information then they will be more likely to learn it. I want them to enjoy learning about it as well. This cute little video is an example of something to show students to introduce them to a topic, such as learning about the presidents.

When I Think of Teaching Social Studies I Think of...

I think of teaching my students about history and geography. Geography is pretty easy to explain why it is important to learn about. You have to know how to read a map and you should know where countries and continents are located in the world. History is still a topic that students ask why they have to learn about it. I know I asked this question in my head during elementary school. The main answer I received was so that we learned from our mistakes in the past and history won't repeat itself. We need to know the history of events so that we understand why the world is the way it is now, for example the government. I hope to teach my students why Social Studies is important and find a way to make it interesting and easy to understand.
