This book was very challenging because it presented complicated themes and symbols such as binary thinking between good and bad. The author shares his experiences as a U.S. Olympian, World War II veteran, and prisoner of war survivor. This book is an incredible story of his life, even in his early troubled childhood and his experiences lost at sea. I loved this story because Zamperini was able to forgive the Japanese soldiers that tortured him as a prisoner of war. His faith in God helped him overcome his trauma from the war. This book was very inspiring and had me at the edge of my seat the whole time. This is similar to Louis Zamperini's story as a POW in Asia. It portrayed the relationship between Father and son. David Gilmore shares about how he allowed his son to drop out of high school. Instead of the usual type of education, they agree to watch three movies a week together. Through this, David teaches Jesse important lessons in life. I love the heartfelt conversations they shared and the movies they talked about.
