M1.02 Why do you want to use tablets in your teaching?

We have no WiFi and we ban mobile phones or tablets at our school. Why? The reason we use to explain parents and students that playing games and using social networks during breaks make children tired and it’s difficult for them to concentrate during the lesson afterwards. Our headmistress also thinks we need no tablets since we can use books to teach our students successfully. Another reason - computers are everywhere, let children be without them at least at school.

From my point of view, we loose a lot because of these excuses. As I can see, our students try to catch any chance to go online or play mobile phone games. Especially teenagers. They have to control themselves for 45 and then rush into their smartphones. Unfortunately, as it was said in the video above, if we don’t teach them how they can gain from their gadgets, they use them mostly as consumers.

Tablets at schools can help us to teach our students not only necessary skills they need, but to show them the way they can develop themselves creatively with their own technology. It wan’t be something forbidden, it will become something they learn from at school and at home just right from the reality they live in.

However, there'll be some difficulties:

Schools in Estonia use E-school. All the information is in a system called "E-kool". Teachers, parents and students have access to the system. We put marks, write home assignments there, we can communicate with parents due to this system.

However, it can't be used as Edmodo. We can't communicate online with students, discuss assignments etc.

I often ask my students to watch different videos or read articles at home, answer the questions or give opinion. I can use Edmodo to make a group for my students, upload links of videos and articles, ask them to write their opinion. It can save our time during the lesson: if students read their classmates ideas, we can discuss them together at school.

I can also make quizzes, so students will have change to practice at home before their test. So it will save a lot of paper :)

I use pair and group work quite often. The way I divide my students depends on a task. If it's just to act out a dialogue with more than two participant, I use some funny strategies like grouping cards, name tags of different shapes, numbers etc.

Such a random choice of group members doesn't work 100% because all students have different level. So, when the groups are formed we decide how to help students who have lower level of knowledge together (they change roles, or groups).

If students work with a long-term project, like project about different countries, cultures, animals etc., I give them some time to make their own decision. Then, they present me their groups and we also decide, how to change them, if necessary.

"Personalised learning is in many ways the holy grail of innvovation in education. So far, I've been using observation only because I'm a young teacher. However, it's not the fastest way. I also talk to my students and ask them about their learning preferences. I think, it's not always enough to get a full picture. However, students' opinion really helps.

At my lessons I try to integrate all types of tasks, so they can use body to show something, listening, reading and other skills.

Since we don't have tablets, I can't use many online games at my lessons. Since we don't have tablets, I can't use some steps of the FC.

So far I have several ideas.

1) Simple one: Discuss online videos (We watch quite a lot of videos on different topics at the lesson) and comment on it.

2) More complicated:

- Read some materials, watch videos,

- find new words and expressions (discuss them in a class, make a list),

- choose your topic, make a plan,

- work in groups or pairs, compare your plans with your partners (add or make changes), share roles, make a presentation,

- in groups: think of any questions on the topic's of your classmates (use teacher's help),

- speak about your topic in front of your classmates, answer their questions.

- Assess each other + teacher's assessment
