Accessed 20 Sep 2016.

The development of a system of writing is crucial for a successful civilization for various reasons. Pictured below is a vary of pictograms and various languages along with some of the Phoenician alphabet. This alphabet was the earliest alphabet developed. Without a basic writing system, the government could not form laws, architecture could not be built (due to the need of instructions), and religion could not truly form (from Catholicism to Animism all involve writing). With writing, public works could also be created (from major farm lands during the neolithic era, to modern day bridges.) Along with writing comes jobs such as scribes (it's specialized as well). Thus, A system of writing is crucial to a successful civilization.

The System of writing is the most important -Matt C

The system of writing is the most important aspect of a civilization because all other parts of a civilization would fall apart without it. Before language, there were no civilizations only villages that were known to not advance. Language helped civilizations appear. without language, most architecture projects could be finished, no one would be on the same page. Public works were a big part in building projects such as the Colosseum, the Aqueducts, and the Pyramids all required a form of writing to explain how to build and when to. Jobs require language to teach new artisans. Religion is not able to survive many years if there is not a paper or scripture that explains its original meaning. The social classes are usually determined by your standing with your job, and if there is not a common language, there are no social classes because there would barely be any people specializing in jobs. A government can not function without writing because the rules could change at any moment and so future rulers do it the way that was made many years ago. Clearly, without languages, we would still be at square one. THE ROSETTA STONE, 196 B.C./nInscribed in Egyptian hieroglyphic and demotic characters and in Greek with a decree of honor of Ptolemy V Epiphanes, 196 B.C.. I chose this image because there are many jobs in current society, but one of the most common places to work is in an office. It is essential to have job specialization because the things that get done in a society define the society. For example, in the neolithic era, the only job people had was farming. Their society was entirely focused on the production of food, which means it is not really a civilization. Our current society is so much more technologically advanced because we have so many more different jobs and as a result we have a strong economy. Generally, the less civilized societies have a smaller variety of jobs. Not as much gets done, not as much progress is made, and not as many people are successful economically. Because of this, job specialization is crucial in making a civilization function.

This temple was built as a tribute to the Ancient Greek goddess of wisdom, Athena. The city-state of Athens was named after Athena giving the Parthenon an important building, especially to the Greeks. This temple features massive columns, each contrasting with subtle details and three different types of columns can be found in ancient Greece architecture. Over time the Parthenon was used as a store for ammunition by the Turks, who had conquered the Greeks and this caused an explosion inside the Parthenon the 17th century. Although it's tragic end people still go and take pieces of the Parthenon's rubble to keep as souvenirs, making the memory of this amazing architecture last.

It took 21 years to build, the main dome is 240 feet high. Inside, there is a fake tomb of Mumtaz Mahal (Shan Jahan's wife) But, her body really lays below the garden. Building the Taj Mahal gave many artisans and craftsman jobs. The white marble changes color depending on how the sunlight hits it. This represents a "Feature of Civilization" because it expresses belief, talent and values of the society. N.p., n.d. Web. 20 Sept. 2016.

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon is one of the seven wonders of the ancient world and it was constructed in about 600 BC, making it the second oldest of the seven. It was built in the City State of Babylon, which is now modern day Iraq. The building was around 80 feet tall. It was created by King Nebuchadnezzar and was thought to be created to cheer up his wife since he thought it would be a way to recreate her homeland. However the Hanging Gardens of Babylon was destroyed in the 2nd century BC by an earthquake. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon represents a feature of civilization because it fits under the category of architecture. Two reason it fits in the category is that it is considered a building, which has to do with architecture and also like all other buildings, it serves a purpose, in this case, to help a King's homesick wife feel better. Architecture is important because it expresses strength and unity in the society. In order for the building to be built, people have to work together, building unity and expressing it. When people work together, it makes the society as a whole stronger. As well it expresses artistic expression and scientific and mathematic knowledge.
