The iron forms a circle around the magnet flowing from one end to another. The Poles of the magnet is pulling the iron up vertically due to the pole having the greatest magnetic force.

There are not two ends to this magnet. The poles are on the opposite sides. The iron sticks up throughout the entire magnet and not just in one place.
