The result is a Training Needs Analysis report that recommends a specific course of action.

The purpose of a Needs Analysis is to pinpoint the reasons an organization needs training prior to creating the course. Conducting a training needs analysis before you start putting together your training program is a crucial step to developing more effective training materials and capturing the best use of your production time, can be defined as a systematic process which helps teachers to collect information and get an accurate and complete picture of their students’ needs and preferences.

Helps us assess the needs.
This process sometimes does not involve looking at the learners’ individual needs, but may involve looking at the requirements and expectations of other members involved, such as employees, parents, teachers and financial supporters.

- Some probable resources for gathering information are: questionnaires, surveys, tests, observations and individual interviews.
-Generally a need analysis tries to get information on the situations in which a language is going to be used, the purposes for which that language is needed, the types of communication that are going to be used in the course and the level of proficiency that is required to develop a syllabus.

Gracias a Brown (2005, p. 272) includes the nine different kinds of Needs Analysis in a list as follows:

- Target-situation analysis looks for information on the language requirements learners face while learning a specific language.
- Deficiency analysis accounts for learners’ present needs and wants as well as their target situation shortages.
- The analysis of the current situation deals with the disputes of the students at the beginning of the academic training.
-Learning-oriented analysis takes into account the needs to be addressed between students and their context.
-Strategy analysis efforts to find student preferences by referring to learning strategies, error correction, group size, amount of homework.
-The media analysis focuses on the learning situation, with as few ideas as possible regarding practicality, logistics, cultural appropriateness, etc.
-Language audit takes a large scale view, in terms of strategic language policies for companies.
-Set menu analysis creates a menu including all the main courses learners can select.
-Computer-based analysis conducted by computer can be negotiated between students and teacher.

When we use the needs assessment characterization?

We can use the characterization of the needs analysis before starting a course, that is, have a teaching model designed for the teaching and understanding of the English language. If the characterization analysis is wrong, we must change it, taking into account the error made, its solutions and, in turn, what results are expected to be obtained.

Why and how evaluate student´s needs and preferences in learning English to resolve this gap absence of knowledge, skills or both?

Because we must evaluate the needs of the students, it allows us to know the shortcomings that can be obtained when teaching English, also if the information is understandable for the student or not.
