I really liked being able to help a lot of teachers in my leadership role. Math 8 teachers would often come to me with questions and concerns and I liked being able to be the point of contact for them and to find answers if I wasn't sure.

I also liked being a part of really meaningful conversations when it came to decisions about the department as a whole.

The middle school counseling team was almost all brand new last year. It has really been fun this year getting to work alongside them, teaching and training them in more depth. We have an amazing team and it is my privilege to be their Lead. We have implemented so many new supports this year: Being a part of RTI, Coffee with the Counselors, Joining the MTSS team, office hours, clubs and groups with STs, and we have started the RAMP application process. (Recognized ASCA Model Program.) It has been an amazing year!

I have truly enjoyed the opportunity to collaborate with all of the teachers in the math department. I have formed strong relationships with many people and I may not have had that opportunity if I hadn't been in the role as their lead. I think collaboration is a vital part of why Reach is so wonderful. We are given ample time as teachers at Reach to communicate with each other, share ideas, and voice concerns which ultimately allows us to continue to grow and improve as educators.

I am very thankful to have had the opportunity to be a voice for our amazing math team and to create and foster relationships among team members. I trust that every single member of our math team is here for our students and has our students best interests in mind when making decisions. I am hopeful that I have earned their trust as well through communication, transparency, and willingness to help them throughout the year.

Data- I have not had a lot of extra time to really dig deeply into the functionality of the administrative side of USA Test Prep. I am sure there are a lot of wonderful reports that I could be running and sharing with my team. I would love to have some training on the admin accounts in USA Test Prep and specifically how I can use that account to help my team better track data and use data to guide our instruction.

Structure- I think we (leads) could benefit from having a leads meeting (perhaps monthly?) to discuss important information that we plan to pass along at department meetings, ideas for making department meetings more engaging, etc.

Will the Chairs/Captains be asked to attend any of the monthly leadership meetings in Harrisburg? I was also wondering if there has been any thought about reducing the caseload for the leadership roles.

We are already working to improve the role! Twice monthly meetings with Dan will provide the Administrative guidance and support that we need. I would love to have some added trainings geared just for the counselors to add to our PLC time. Guest speakers, maybe the specialists, admin, other roles that we do not routinely connect with.

Role: I feel the job description for the role does not match the actual duties that were performed. I know they are working to update job descriptions and I think that will be helpful to let us know what we should be doing.

Redistributing Job Responsibilities: As a lot of the teachers on the team wanted to meet with me for questions/concerns/help there were a lot of additional meetings added to my plate. I did find balancing all regular teaching duties in addition to GLC/Captain duties difficult. I do think the leadership roles should be considered when teams are created and number of students are assigned to help lighten the load of some of the teaching duties to allow time for the leadership duties/meetings.

The best part of being in leadership is the responsiveness of admin to what leadership brings to the table. Admin understands that the teachers have the needs of our students in mind and addresses each of our concerns with consideration and integrity. What follows is a better environment for our learners - whether that be a timely change, a next-year change, or something we are keeping in consideration for 22-23. It is really nice to see this type of positive change occurring and even better to be a part of that.

I really like the summer day where we will be able to meet, because I feel like the start of the year stuff was very much determined by admin-only since staff weren't working, and then when staff/leads/captains requested changes to benefit our learners, it was difficult to do because there was already a system in place (easiest example: the instructional schedule) - so I think this is a huge step that we are already improving just by having the idea of a little bit of summer work for leads/captains.

I would love to see this role take even more shape into various leadership categories. I'd love to see Department Chairs not only handle the administrative side of things but also provide trainings to staff (maybe during Choice Board PD) and visit teacher classrooms (not in any supervisory capacity but to see what our teachers are doing well and what they may be struggling with). One of my teachers said to me this year that they "don't know what they don't know" and it is hard as a new teacher what to even ask questions about. Depending on how the teacher was trained and who their mentor was, they might have learned many tips and tricks that more seasoned teachers know and they might not. It seems to be hit or miss and it would be nice to visit classrooms on occasion to provide feedback on what challenges teachers are facing and what trainings might be helpful in the future.

I'd also love to see this role take on a more collaborative effort with technology efforts within the school and be able to collaborate with other Department Chairs about core content and Electives needs. I'd also love to have a newsletter of some kind created where Electives and what students are learning in those classes are showcased so core teachers are more aware of the work that Electives are doing. I'd also love to see Electives teachers "visit" core teacher classrooms but I do think that is a large dream haha!

I'd also love to see focused trainings for the different leadership positions (GLC/Captains and Leads/Department Chairs) with specific and defined roles with no overlap in job duties.
