A ruminant is a mammal which has a stomach divided into four parts (rumen, reticulum, omasum and abomasum) and uses rumination. In this process, plant based food is chewed and swallowed as usual, and then mixed with saliva in the rumen and reticulum. Here, solid material separates from liquid material and comes together in clumps. This is then regurgitated as cud and re-chewed slowly, allowing microbes to break down the cellulose and the animal to use the nutrients most effectively.

A ruminant is a "mammal that chews the cud regurgitated from its rumen" A rumen is one of four stomach compartments found in ruminants. Some ruminants include cattle, sheep, goats and deer.

The digestion begins in a ruminant when the animal swallows a mouthful of plants. It is only partly chewed and swallowed quickly. It is mixed into a bolus with saliva and then swallowed down the oesophagus into the rumen. When the animal is resting after eating it regurgitates the partially chewed food from the rumen, chews it again and then re-swallows it.

The oesophagus in ruminants has the ability to do reverse peristalsis so they can regurgitate the food easily.

Ruminants have some digestive parts that other animals don't. They have the rumen, reticulum, the omasum and the abomasum. The rumen is the largest if the 4 compartments. It acts as storage for the food. The reticulum is right next to the rumen and is separated by a small fold of tissue, though they are not actually separate compartments. The omasum absorbs water from the leaves and the abomasum had hydrochloric acid and digestive enzymes which breaks down food.
