At first the meals are long and luxurious: "The food had been good, the wine perfect. Rogers waited well" (42).

The meals continue to represent normality, even after several deaths. "They went into breakfast. There was a vast dish of eggs and bacon on the sideboard and tea and coffee." Rogers did this after his wife died!

After Rogers' death: EB and VC cook for everyone, almost immediately after finding the body. Pg. 195- character thoughts. "Six people behaving normally at breakfast" (195).

As the meals break down, so do the guests and the order in the house. "The midday meal had been duly eaten- but there had been no conventional formality about it...They had opened a tin of tongue and two tins of fruit. The had eaten standing around the kitchen table" (213). ***Abnormal thoughts about EACH OTHER as they're eating.

At the end: "If I even see a tinned tongue, I shall be sick! I don't want any food. People go days on end with nothing..." " I'm not going back to the house. I'm going to stay here- in the open" (250).

When they first came to the island they all thought it was cute and nice because they thought it was going with the theme of the island name but they really didn't know what it stood for.

When Rogers was standing it the dining room he noticed something off about the soldier figurines. "Downstairs in the dining room, Rogers stood puzzled. He was staring at the china figures in the center of the table. He muttered to himself: That's a rum go! I could have sworn there were ten of them". Rogers saw that a soldier figurine was missing and he was telling himself that there were ten there the last time he saw them. (81)
Rogers is still freaking out about the soldier figures so he calls Dr. Armstrong into the dining room and he telling him about how there aren't ten soldier figures anymore and that there are only eight of them left. " There's things going on, sir, You'll say it isn't anything. But it's got to be explained, sir. It's going to be explained. Because it doesn't make any sense. Well, man, tell me what it is. Don't go on talking in riddles. Rogers swallowed again. He said: It's those little figures, sir. In the middle of the table. The little china figures. Ten of them, there were. I'll swear to that, ten of them. Armstrong said: Yes, ten. We counted them last night at dinner. Rogers came nearer.' After that he went on to say that when he was cleaning last night there were nine and now there are eight of them.

At the end of this everyone realize that the figures represent the people staying on the island because every single someone died there was one less figure.

The poem i important because it's like the main point of the book and it was the way everyone was going to die.
Vera first said something about it on page 44 and she was saying how it was above her be and everyone said it was all over there beds and they started going through it together. They thought it was cute because it was going towards the theme of the name of the island since its soldier island so they thought it was cute with the 10 little soldier boys poem and the soldier figurines in the middle of the dining room table.
Then at the end of the book Vera also said that it was like how everyone was dying and she was saying someone was killing everyone in the order of the poem but somethings on the poem they were confused how it was going to happen because it wasn't possible to happen on a island with nothing on it. She was comparing how everyone that died to the poem and she was also saying how everyone was like a zoo and she was calling everyone these different animals.
This shows that the poem is important to the book and how if it wasn't in the book then the book would be different then it already is.
