This Era was a time of political change and social activism across the United States, during the 1890's to the 1920's. The goal was to try to take out problems caused by industrialization, urbanization, immigration, and corruption in government. The progressives hoped to to pass laws that would legislate social issues like factory conditions, floods of immigration, racial tensions, and poverty and overcrowding in cities. They also wanted to establish public transportation, environmental conservation, stronger sanitation laws, and consumer protection laws that would create organizations like the FDA and require accurate food labeling.

The NAWSA and the AWSA were groups of women in many countries that worked hard to try to pass Women's Suffrage legalization at the State level. The NAWSA was the main group that helped push to pass the 19th Amendment and was led by Carrie Chapman Catt. Another Group called the National Women's Party, led by Alice Paul, copied Britain's ideas of violent protests to help pass the Amendment. They chained themselves to the White House Fence and started Hunger strikes to try to publicize Women's Suffrage . They were widely criticized for attracting anit-war elements and ignoring the current war.
