Teddy Roosevelt was contradictory because he wanted progressive reforms like the creation of national parks for environmental preservation and also safety is food labeling and regulations for stating the ingredients in food and drugs, yet he is also known for expanding US control in foreign economic affairs.

The goal was to try to take out problems caused by industrialization, urbanization, immigration, and corruption in government. The progressives hoped to to pass laws that would legislate social issues like factory conditions, floods of immigration, racial tensions, and poverty and overcrowding in cities. Another Group called the National Women's Party, led by Alice Paul, copied Britain's ideas of violent protests to help pass the Amendment. They chained themselves to the White House Fence and started Hunger strikes to try to publicize Women's Suffrage .
