My neighborhood is racially diverse with many Indian and Muslim neighbors. I frequently saw classmates be discriminated due to their race and being seen as "different." During lunch time, people would make fun of their food that looked and smelled unfamiliar. I would frequently hang out at my best friend Jasmin's house and learned about her culture and upbringing.

She helped my parents raise my brother and I and was a major presence in my life. She decided to take a DNA test to finally discover information about her ethnic background. The DNA test showed that she was 99% Irish.

The school was predominately Black and Hispanic students. I often heard my mom complain about the lack of resources and therapy materials that she received. It was clear that her school did not receive adequate funding or supplies. I would often accompany my mom to set up her room every school year (she would spend hundreds of dollars out of pocket) and attend school events with her. She loved her students and always spoke about how fufilling her work was. This is where my interest in public education began.

Every week we would meet for lunch. It was an opportunity for her to practice her English language skills and it allowed me to get to know her and learn about life in China. It was an incredibly fulfilling experience and gave me insights into the challenges of learning a new language.
