The United States is a federal republic formed by 50 states located in North America. Besides the 48 conterminous states that occupy the middle latitudes of the continent, the United Sates includes the state of Alaska, at the northwestern extreme of North America, and the island state of Hawaii, in the mid-Pacific Ocean. The conterminous states are bounded on the north by Canada, on the east by the Atlantic Ocean, on the south by the Gulf of Mexico and Mexico, and on the west by the Pacific Ocean. The United States is the fourth largest country in the world in area.

With a total population of more than 330 million people, the United States is the third most populous country in the world, behind India and China. Fertility rates have remained below replacement level in recent years, however the population has continued to grow due to migration and rising life expectancy. Consistent immigration has also resulted in an ethnically-diverse population. As in other multi-ethnic societies, racial discrimination has been a consistent problem in the United States, with its roots tracing back to the colonization of the Americas and transatlantic slavery. Inequalities in income and criminal justice disproportionately affect Black and Hispanic communities, and the average Black household income has been roughly 60 percent of white household income since the 1960s.

The U.S. economy is by far the a largest economy in the world, measured in terms of gross domestic product (GDP). In 2021, U.S. GDP amounted to about 22.7 trillion U.S. dollars. This is more than the combined GDPs of the second and third largest economies, China and Japan. The most important export partners of the U.S. are Canada, Mexico, and China who accounted for more 40 percent of U.S. exports in 2019. The United States also impinges on the global economy as a source of and as a destination for investment capital. The country continues to sustain an economic life that is more diversified than any other on Earth, providing the majority of its people with one of the world’s highest standards of living.

A lot of multilingual countries promote an official language, but the United States has never done so with English. In fact, the US has no official language. However, there's no question that English is the de facto language of the United States. It's the language of government documents, court proceedings and business contracts, and immigrants feel an immense pressure to learn it. Most people in the US only speak English.

The USA is an immigrant country with a great diversity of people, cultures, music, food, and sports—with just about every climate, landscape, and terrain imaginable. Pop culture is everywhere, sports and news dominate many conversations, and American culture and traditions vary greatly depending on region, ethnicity and religion. The American cultural identity transpires from the body of the cultural output this nation has produced and spread all over the globe. The economical prosperity of the U.S. determined powerful cultural industries that commercialize America’s popular culture. The latter’s spread depends on three main globalizing forces: trade and international commerce, media and communication technology, and arts and language. They are behind the rise of the consumer economy and the American lifestyle which, in turn, are having intense effects on different nations around the world.

The United States is a secular nation, meaning there is a formal separation between state and religious entities. Society is underpinned by the strong principle of religious freedom that emphasises people’s liberty to worship any religion and to not favour one religion over another. This is evident in the First Amendment which states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof”. While the country is highly religiously diverse, the American national identity and patriotism is often linked to Christianity. Christianity is the largest religious affiliation at 70.6%. Non-Christian religions made up 5.9% of the population, of which 1.9% identified as Jewish, 0.9% identified as Muslim, 0.7% identified as Buddhist and 0.7% identified as Hindu.1 Finally, 22.8% identified as unaffiliated, which includes agnostics (4.0%) and atheists (3.1%).2
