Isaac Hopper was born in 1771 at Woodberry, New Jersey in a family full of quakers (religious person who want the peace all over the word). His family who were hard prayers told him the price of life and freedom.

At 16 years old he moved to Philadelphia and become a tailor. That's at this moment that he became an helper of slaves.
We estimate that he saved around 1 000 slaves when he was in Philadelphia. His goodness was reward with a place in the "pensilvania abolition society".

He was married with Sarah Tatun in 1795 and had eight childrens.
16 years later, after giving a lot of money to the charity, he was seriously ill and, unfortunally, he ran out of money and was not able to pay back his debts.

His wife died in 1822 but Isaac got married 2 years later with another woman. He had 4 childrens with her.

He voluntarily became an prison inspector and gave many tips and help to the prisonners.

Then, he mooved to New York in 1829 with all his family and was as always helping slaves to escape.

Finally, he died on the 7th may 1852 and his last sentence was "Say them that I love them all".
This quotation refers to all slaves who were saved by him

To sum up, Isaac Hopper was an honest man and helped everyone, especially slaves. For example , one day, when a slave knocked at his door with 8000 stolen dollars, he was mad and told him to give the money back otherwise he will not host him.

The Underground Railroad was a secret organization of routes and safe places used by slaves to escape to freedom.
Slaves left southern states and went to the free northern states and Canada, where their color wasn't a problem. Started in the early XVIII century, The Underground Railroad ended when slavery was abolished during the Civil War.
At least 30 000 people used this secret system to make their way to freedom.
Before the XVIII century, slaves were not free and had many prohibitions like, for example:
They were not allowed to receive an education, to marry, to vote...
But slaves could received one new set of winter and summer clothes an new blanket, to sleep on a dirt floor, to eat...
Slaves were forced to work by their masters and were punished if they tried to escape.
