Person 1: Why bother viewing literature through the Feminist perspective? Why should we still use it to analyze literature?

In Macbeth, the people who have the power are the men, and this can usually be found common in lots of older types of literature. We should still use it to analyze because this way we can view how times have changed somewhat and how some things still need to be changed to create more equality.

Person 3: Feminist Analysis of Passage from Macbeth

"My hands are of your color, but I shame / To wear a heart so white... / A little water clears us of this deed" (2.2.82-82-86).

Answer the following:

The speaker is Lady Macbeth and she is speaking to Macbeth.

This is after Duncan's murder. Macbeth comes back with the murder weapon and this is after Lady Macbeth goes to return it.

This passage represents the change of the ideal image of what is masculine and what is feminine. The stereotypical idea of what is masculine and feminine is the man goes out and is "involved" when the woman stereotypically doesn't do so. This shows the flip of these stereotypes by getting Lady Macbeth involved in the Murder and by having Lady Macbeth tell Macbeth that he needs to stop freaking out about this because her "hands are of [his] color".

1. There are traditional labels that, in summary, say feminine attributes denote powerlessness and destruction where as masculine values are equated with power.

2. The women in the play have to have the traditional masculine qualities in order to achieve power in the play, meaning they can't be powerful if they aren't a man.

3. Power relationships among men pivot upon images of male sexual aggression and violence, whereas a traditional feminine role is as a mother and a nurturer, again bringing in the stereotypes of what men and women are supposed to be.

1. What constitutes masculinity and femininity in the text?
The role of the witches adds a dynamic of ambiguity that disturbs the typical gender roles. The witches are female but are aggressive and authoritative and only use their power to cause mischief that doesn't follow the typical gender roles.

2.What are the power relationships between men and women?
The play bends the typical gender roles in a way that lets the woman take the male role. Lady Macbeth's "sacrifice of her womanliness" helps her take in more masculine qualities in order to get her work done. The "image of male sexual aggression and violence" are what the male power relationships are built on. Lady Macbeth takes on this role to get her work done because no one would listen to her if she were a traditional female.
