Participation! It can create a challenge if there are only a couple students participating in a group assignment. The more participants the better as it allows collaboration of ideas. A good discussion can open everyones minds to seeing others perspectives.
Participation! I think that participation is a key component to group discussions. Lack of participation or responses that lack depth can make it difficult to interact with others about the topic at hand.
Depends on the group size. If it is a small group, I am fine speaking in groups. When the group is larger, like 10 people or more, it can make it more challenging to be comfortable to speak up. When there are a lot of people in a group discussion, I tend to struggle interjecting myself into the conversation as I don't want to be interupting others in the discussion.

This can vary for me. If I'm confident in the subject matter or feel like I'm in a safe space with clear expectations then I have no problem engaging. If however I sense an element of hostility or a feeling of being unsafe I will be reserved in my participation.

There are a few factors and the one that stands out most to me would be engagement and participation. You cannot have one without the other. I feel that setting norms helps, and ensuring that technologies, *phones/computers, are tucked away to allow for healthy and meaningful discussion. As humans, we thrive on connection to others and this is only possible with discussion. Honesty would be another one - but that is harder to achieve in various environments too.

The challenging part is being the first one to speak and to share ones ideas. The position of being the first is so vulnerable which doesn't help.

The other side of challenging group discussions if only a few people are dominating the discussion to not allow space and voice from others who want to share too.

I feel like I will always be willing to participate as I recognize that someone may want to hear my voice, or that I might be advocating for something that someone else does not feel comfortable or confident in sharing. I do not always like being the first, but I will always speak as I can sympathize/empathize with the facilitator of the discussion and want to find ways to show support.

It really depends on the setting and my knowledge of the topic. If I feel I have something important to contribute, I can usually speak up. If I'm less sure about my knowledge, I'm more likely to remain quiet and just take in information for processing.

So everyone has already made some great points, but I'm going to add that for large groups I think a moderator for the discussion is necessary. It can make sure everyone gets heard and that the group discussion stays on topic.

I also find that starting the discussion and staying on topic are definite challenges for group discussions.

I think that when all group members fully commit to the process and are willing to share while also feel comfortable to share the ideas, all will work out very well!

A challenging aspect of group discussions are when individuals struggle to work through opposing views. Also, if there is a lack of a leader in the group I find the group sturggles

I think for group discussions to work well, you need to have group members that are active listeners, open minded, inclusive, and have defined roles. Being able to speak freely and not be judged based on your input is key to having an engaging and successful group discussion.

Applying adult learning theory makes group discussion work! First think of Maslow before Bloom, then apply Knowles principles. Preparation is key. Group size is also important. Finally, remember not to let the 'dominators' take over and hold space for everyone.

In My opinion the hability to weave its the key to participation. The facilitator keeping everyone engage while they take into account the opinion of the group is the most important factor to keep participation high in a group.
