This quote is the three witches' mantra and motto. They invert good and evil: what is evil may appear good and vice versa. This quote symbolises that although events, people or things may appear to be good, they are in fact the epitome of evil. This quote can be related back to our own global society as many people , events, companies and organisations seem good, they can in fact, be the opposite of that. This quote is prevalent in this day and age more so than during the Elizabethan era.

We can relate Macbeth to modern society as it is human nature to succumb to temptation. To give in to things we want and not necessarily what we need. Shakespeare gives warning of the outcome of ambition. The play teaches its readers to exercise restraint when it comes to "spilling" their desires to those who seek to know them.

When we look at Lady Macbeth and her statement “Look like the innocent flower but be the serpent under’t” the cruelty and deception of human nature becomes apparent. The greed and lust of power that lead to this deception is prevalent in modern society, and as Steven Hawking stated “we are in danger of destroying ourselves by our greed and stupidity”. A more recent example experienced in Europe, is the image of a loving and nurturing Religion that ISIS tries to portray, all the while when they have no qualms killing non believers.

Macbeth deals with a large variety of dreams in tangled with deceit, some of which are advantageous and others lead to the Macbeth's inevitable demise.

Dreams:
Macbeth is tormented by nightmares, most of which involve his killing of the king, in his mind he has killed a good man and a better king. He believes himself to be less human for doing so. His reasons well documented; the withes prophesy absolute and unavoidable.
He begins to waver in his judgments and sleep has changed from something pleasant to something frightening.
" Ere we will eat our meal in fear, and sleep

In the affliction of these terrible dreams

That shake us nightly."
( Act 3, Scene 2 )

Lady Macbeth too met her demise by the illusions within her dreams. She dreamed of washing her hands clean of the former kings blood, in reality she was sleepwalking and whilst doing so confessed to the crimes committed by both her and her husband.
(Act 5, Scene 1)

Thus dreaming plays part of the 'appearance vs. Reality' theme.

Sleep and dreams may appear to be a moment of safety and relaxation, however in context of Macbeth's tale, the opposite is true. This became especially true during act two, scene two - when Duncan was killed by Macbeth in his sleep. Therefore it was fitting that sleep would played the part it has.
