Shakespeare believed that other English plays lacked plot which is why he chose to write such tragic stories. During Shakespeare's time the thought of witch craft was seen as something extremely evil. He included witches because he knew it would shock and scare his audience which would make for a more diverse plot. Witch craft was more common and believed in back then so it made the story realistic to viewers.

In more recent times witches have somewhat lost their scare factor. Witch craft is quite popular on social media nowadays with people idolizing tarot readings, crystals and spiritual communication. During Shakespeare's era though witches were seen as a sign of evil and they were believed to have ties to the devil. They were equivalent to our modern day haunted dolls and clowns. Shakespeare was able to use witches as the "monsters" in his tragedy because they were believed in. Since witchcraft isn't seen as scary nowadays it would not have the same impact it did back then.
