It was almost midnight on a cold and dark December night, and I could hear the wind howling outside. I had not gone to bed yet. I was sitting comfortably in my armchair, reading an old book. I was nodding off, almost asleep, when I heard a gentle tapping on my door.

It was a quiet sound, but it startled me. Was it just a dream? No, there it was again! A knock-knock-knock on my door. Who could it be at this hour? I felt uneasy. ‘Oh, it is probably just a visitor,’ I mumbled to myself, ‘nothing more.’ A third time, I heard the sound. I called out, ‘I am sorry, I was just falling asleep when you knocked,’ and I stood up and walked across my room.

I could feel my heart beating, tick-tick-tock, like a clock. I opened the door, and there – darkness, nothing else. There was no one at the door. For a moment, I stared into the shadows, but there was no one – or nothing – to be seen. I closed the door again and turned around, but just then, I heard a knock-knock-knock on my door again. It was louder this time. ‘Maybe it is the wind,’ I thought, but I was not so sure.

‘There must be someone there,’ I thought, just as I heard a tap-tap-tapping again. I walked over to my window and flung it open. ‘Who is there?’ I called in a trembling voice, but I could not see anyone.

Finally, I opened my door again. And there, sitting on my letterbox, was an enormous, ghastly, pitch-black raven, looking at me with two dark eyes. It flapped its wings and made a horrible, scratchy croak, 'kraa-kraa-kraaa,’ and then it flew straight at me.
