I’m a mother, a graphic artist, someone who loves nature, a little reclusive. I identify with both England and Australia, although I was born in England, I have lived in Australia now almost as long. My extended family all live in the UK and I still have a strong pull to where I was born - Christchurch, England - a breezy seaside town. So where is home? Is it the family I live with, the land I’m familiar with, or perhaps both? My children are Australian and to me this is now the strongest pull, but although I live happily in the Adelaide Hills surrounded by beautiful gum trees and birds I always relate strongly to the openness of the beach.

I always find it interesting when I'm travelling and we use the term 'home' as the place we go back to sleep but I think home is much more than that. My family comes from England and Ireland, however I identify myself as an Australian because it is where I grew up and where I developed my morals and beliefs. I think home is where there is an emotional attachment.

I was born and raised in Athens, Greece and I've been living in Australia studying University for nearly two years now. I'm looking forward to having some discussion with all of you over the next 12 weeks or so :)

To be honest i kind of cringe at the term 'Australian' as it seems to me to be a point of difference from another 'non-Australian'.
Furthermore, it is a term generally used in nationalistic debates concerning belonging and assimilation to a common ideal of 'Australianess' with which i do not generally identify.

However, for lack of an alternative term I suppose I would say I am an Australian, having lived here and been born here. Home for me denotes a community of friends and family, as well as the place i live.

Moving around a lot as a child/teen I never lived in one home for a fairly long period of time. So for me, home is somewhere that feels nostalgic and emotionally personal to me and who I am living with. Recently I have moved out of home. Living by myself is something I'm not at all used to so it took some time but after settling it is not the place i am in, but more the memories of the belongings I own and have collected that make my place feel like my home. My home is my refuge, my space to feel sheltered, safe and comfortable.
