After I got used to using charcoal I began drawing. The charcoal was extremely useful for shading. I shaded the apple with different levels of pressure and angles to make the apple more realistic. This helped me emphasize the natural coloring of the flower. To add extra texture, I used a little bit of rubbing alcohol; this added more detail and variation on the drawing. Overall, the first steps in drawing the flower were simple but it became more complex once I added watercolor. By adding the rubbing alcohol, I was able to make my drawing look much more unique as it changed the colors from just being normal watercolor. I enjoyed this assignment as I was able to draw a nice flower and add complexity to it. I also used a little bit of a splattering technique, and continued to paint over it as i noticed that gave the flower more depth. had to be careful to not paint too much at once, as I got worried that paper would get too wet and become damaged. In conclusion, I learned a lot from this assignment. I learned how elements such as contrast and emphasis can drastically affect how an image is perceived. Analyzing pictures I took and realizing how different compositions affected them increases my appreciation for them. I enjoyed learning about different principles of design and applying them to my own pictures. When I first took many of these images I was not even thinking about that. I picked a warm color scheme as it made me reminiscent of the summer. First I started with my blind contour drawing then began adding more details. To add more texture in my art I used the salt and rubbing alcohol techniques. After doing so I noticed a lot more detail in my painting. The most difficult part of this project was creating a blind contour drawing. My drawing distorted what the table originally looked like. I chose to add fruit, flower vases, bowls, and a book into my drawing to add variety. I started out by sketching Martin Luther King's face, then added shading with a charcoal pencil. To add variation in lighting, I used an eraser to clear up some areas and in darker areas such as his hair I used a q-tip to spread the charcoal, while continuing to draw. The assignment took up plenty of time due to the use of shading. I added layers of shading to fully capture lighting, and add details onto his face. The method I used of drawing him captures his seriousness, by adding detail to his expression (with the use of shading). I chose to follow the tutorial of the winter forest. I liked the video as I found it to be very clear and straight-forward. I just wish there was more information about techniques and ideas. I chose not to thicken the paint but I likely would in the future. To create purple I mixed red and blue, then added white to make it more opaque. I found it fun however I did struggle during some parts. Waiting enough time for a layer of paint to dry so I could paint more was difficult for me. I think next time I paint I will look up more techniques.
