From ndevonish:
I agree with Heyun's points. I think it would be a good idea to meet in person next week (once everyone has had a chance to contribute/choose a group) so we can:

1. Make a draft invitation to artists to perform with the information Heyun mentioned below (time of performance and length of performance, theme, budget and tech specs req/needed).

2. Consult with the research team and decide which artists it is feasible to contact and how many.

I do think it's important to pay artists for their time and I'm happy to contribute to that personally if there is no budget. Ha ha policy talk: if this project is not based in an Architect model state where funding is being provided by the government then I would like to approach it with a philanthropic spirit.

From Heyuan:
When we are thinking about the artists, I think, the element we should not ignore is feasibility.
If we just suppose whoever we want, it's a waste of time and energy when it does't work.

The following questions we should tackle and we should make consistent internal information with other teams before we start it.
And when we want to invite someone, we also need to inform the basic information we mention below at first. After that, we can negotiate with artists in terms of some details.

1\The exact time of the performance (considering the time zone, some artists may not be able to attend)
2\The theme of the performance (we should think whether the performances and the artists can meet the theme. It looks like a filtering mechanisms.)
3\The budget we have(should we pay for the artists? If it's a non-paid performance, we should select some artists who are willing to perform without pay)
4\The requirements of technological equipment for artists.(Considering it's a digital performance, what kinds of devices the artists should prepare, just phone, laptop, and microphone ? )

From Daniela
I agree that it would be best to work on this in person. On another note, I suggest that we choose a musical genre that can be linked to a theme / message. Let' s talk about this tomorrow. Additionally, it would be convenient to touch base with the Research Team in order to avoid duplicating tasks. Cheers!

(Heyuan)
Combining the opinions from ndevonish, I think we should have a deadline on being core members in each team. I mean, everyone in this class are able to and should attend this project, but literally we need the core members in each group, so that core members can figure out the basic questions and make sure the basic information ndevonish and I mentioned on the last post.(the number of the students who attend this subject are around 100, it's so hard to listen everyone's opinions at the very beginning),

When the basic information on the digital performance are confirmed, core members can tell the rest of members and make detailed discussion. And everybody can express their ideas on their groups.

In terms of how to select the core members, I haven't have more ideas. Probably, recommending yourselves ?
(if you guys have better ideas, share them.)

And everyone in this subject should choose a team, meanwhile select the position - core members or general members.

These inform our decision making processes and the kinds of choices we might make when curating artists, selecting a theme, negotiating with other groups and artists (e.g. especially about issues such as budget and payment for artists).

GROUP
Diversity - based on what's been written in the Stoneclap so far, and what's come up in class discussion, I think this is an important value to the group. We want to curate an even that reflects the diversity of cultural backgrounds, languages and interests of us students.

INDIVIDUALS

FOR EXAMPLE:
- Anna: some of my core values as an artist are courage, collaboration, transformation and inclusion. This can be seen in the way that I challenge myself to venture into the unknown when directing new works of theatre; how I like to work with others to create a project rather than working in isolation, and that I prefer more democratic processes to authoritative hierarchies; how I love creating theatre that not only transforms the performer and stage into another character and world, but also transforms the way the artists and the audience engage with life; and that I am passionate about fostering inclusive practices and increasing diversity of representation. PS just because I am a theatre artist doesn't mean that I will insist we put on a play for the performance haha no I'm totally fine with a music performance, as I think that is the best use of the Stoneclap software as designed and originally intended.

Curating- Artists

-Amir-

Hello curating team, regarding the themes of the performance, I was thinking, and since we are studying arts and culture and our class is very multicultural, it would be interesting and impressive to put on a transcultural performance.

Maybe, we can get a performer from each continent. Or a performer from 4 or 5 unique cultures around the world.
For instance, one from Australia (local), one from China (our Chinese colleagues could help us), one from America, one from the Middle East (oriental- which I could help with as I know some contemporary oriental artist like a former university colleague who puts on an oriental performance in a dark and mystical mood, and sings along dancing. he is currently getting more and more recognition locally and internationally)

(Heyuan)
Generally speaking,I agree with Amir's opinions! And I posted a similar idea before on Padlet also. (I hope that can give us some inspiration. )

The details are below:

- The theme for the whole digital performance: MIXTURE

- Any kinds of mixed art are welcomed .The following views may or may not be correct , they are only for your reference.
[1] combine your national forms of art and the international one.
(for example , some Chinese pop music combines the western music style with the Chinese traditional instruments )
[2] combine avant-garde art with old-fashion one. (for example, some modern and contemporary dances and old folk music are mixed )
[3] The only requirement is what you perform is not the single form of art.

-The theme "MIXTURE" is aimed to show the multicultural word which literally we are facing and our creativity which is the one of the most important characteristics for young people.
We can have different understanding on "MIXTURE ",including the nation and international, the present and the past, single kind of art and interactive performances and so on.

-Amir-

Wonderful Heyuan, we are on a similar wavelength then!

Mixture is great theme in this.

There are a few things to keep in mind:
-internet speed
-time difference
-finances

Having multiple artists can in fact help with the finances of the project, as this way, we are not taking too much time from the artists- a single artist is not performing for about 30-60 minutes, but instead maybe 3-4 songs or ~10-15 mins each (including/excluding transition time delays..?)

LOCATION

We can perhaps have all artists perform with a background/backdrop of being in a museum or art gallery? or in front of their National Gallery/Museum?

LINGUISTICS

I believe in a transcultural performance an artist should sing their own language/dialects. The more genuine connection and communication is happening on more musical/visual/sensory levels.

ARTISTIC ENDEAVOUR

Ethnic/localised performers with a contemporary twist?

20180314 Cat: Artist manager research job updated in research padlet.

Hey team,

Just wanted to let you know about a research request I've put to the research group. I've asked them to look into student performance groups and clubs at UniMelb and VCA/MCM. This is because Rosemary mentioned earlier in the main Stoneclap discsussion stream this idea. I think should our budget remain tiny (slash non-existant), this is a pragmatic and feasible solution. Create a student-run event featuring student artists. That doesn't mean the quality will be poor; the performers at VCA/MCM are all superbly talented and hard workers. They are also often looking for opportunities to showcase their talents outside of the classroom environment; work where they get more creative agency/freedom from whatever they have to do for assessment. But also the performance could work as a promotional event for their larger upcoming performances at the end of semester.

Then I thought well we should still try to dream big, and linking a Stoneclap over to Southbank isn't that big a task, so we should still challenge ourselves to go after artists based elsewhere nationally and internationally! Again I think if we try to position the event as a promotional activity for artists, where they might do a short set and then tell us to buy tickets for their upcoming tour to Melbourne or whatever, that could work. Artists frequently do free performances and interviews as promotional activities to attract an audience.

Let me be clear; I really believe in paying artists and valuing for their time and effort. I'm just trying to figure out ethical ways of working with small budgets that are recognised as good practice in our sector. I definitely don't want to fall into the exploitative trap of asking artists to work for mere "exposure".

My last thought is that I think it would be really valuable if we make contact with the Wilin Centre for Indigenous Arts and Cultural Development. It is appropriate to ask for the permission of traditional custodians of the land the event is held on, and to ask them to provide a formal Welcome to Country. It is important to me, and I hope it is to you all as well, that we pay our respects to the Boonwurrung and Wurundjeri peoples of the Kulin Nations. I also think it would be amazing if through contacting the Wilin Centre we could invite at least one Australian First Nations performer. I don't want this kind of action to appear as tokenistic, I want it to be meaningful.

Anyway those are just some thoughts I've been having as I avoid reading something boring. I hope we can meet in person soon to talk properly!

Thanks - Anna

-Amir-

I do think we should think/dream big. University of Melbourne would be supportive and so would artists be to students trying to make something for a good purpose!
Our mission is multi-cultural celebration, and I think things would line up in our favour if we have something special to give.

However, to dream big we need to work as a team and we need to have everyone weighing in or at least showing their support and will to assist when required.

Cat could you please add the names of the researched artists to the Potential Artists list?

Cat: Hey Amir, I can copy and paste what I have so far from the research Padlet, but I need an answer to my question above before I move forward. Also, gotta let you know that I’m not part of this group, and I don’t get notifications anymore for the majority of posts on Padlet (despite having notifications turned on), so if you edit a post half way down the page, I may miss it.

Anna (or anyone) if you know any performers from the VCA, please do leave their name(s) so we can check out their work.

Regarding the scope of how far we are going with this project, I'm going to shoot Natalia an email, and maybe she can email the class in return asking them to be more active/supportive. And hopefully in class we (the teams) can have a short discussion (throughout or after class) to understand the logistics and scope of our project.

Research Question

Hey guys, hope your planning is treating you well.

I’m a part of the research team and I have a question for you. I originally had a list of all the suggested artists from the main stoneclap Padlet, and had intended to go through them and gather information on price/availability/interest and what not. Given that Natalia has given out tasks, is this still something that you’d be interested in? (It would involve me contacting artists and managers and the like)
-Cat

Hey Cat I'm not one of the team leaders for this group but my suggestion is that you and your team first focus on answering the questions Natalia has asked you to cover in your reports. Then move onto this once we've figured out our curating strategy etc. Thanks 😊 Anna

Hey Anna, thank you so much for replying, you're a star! Our deliverable on the brief is "Digital performances/ arts and artists in Melbourne, Australia and overseas," which is pretty broad, and doesn't cover specifics. I've been instructed by Natalia to research anything that I think will be necessary, but if you have a preference, I'll work to that. Essentially, the research is due in about 2 weeks (29th March). I can hold off for about until roughly the 22nd if you'd prefer to limit which artists you'd like to hear from, or alternatively, I can gather information from every artist suggested, and you can use that to make your decisions (quicker for you guys, but using 3 different people to contact the artists might looks a little bad). Last option - similar to what I did with the student artists, I can send you contact information for managers and you can nut out the details yourselves. Do you have a preference?
-Cat

-Amir-

Hey Cat, thanks so much for your effort!
Regarding researching artists, again we are still not sure about the scope of how "big" we are going, so I can't yet know for sure. However, I am contacting Natalia to get a general statistic from the class on Monday.
Like:
-Having the number of people who are willing to give hand in the future even if they weren't part of the teams raise their hand. (we can understand general will). I really believe this would be important in terms of understanding, that if we go big, we can have a good amount of people assisting in lets say advertising this on social media or to their friends and the general public, which in return could generate an amount of income to pay the artists. And also in having a handful of people with professional skills assist with the technical parts like tech savvy people or set designers...

However, for now, regarding the preliminary research, I think we should stick with researching VCA/local performers.

As we are making the theme contemporary multiculturalism and/or multiple mediums of visual performances and/or a mix of both, I think any contribution from the research team to find contemporary international and local artists would be wonderful and helpful!

Just to keep in mind, the performance is to stimulate our senses, but also do so through a scope of diversity and mental stimulation too (a fair dissemination of knowledge of cross-cultural contemporary performance/ unique cultures taken over/influenced by the globalised reality).

Thanks Cat, please let us know if you read this.

---end---

Read: 17th March, 12:19pm
Cat: Hey Amir! Thanks for sending that through. I have a better idea of what you guys are aiming for (at least from your and Anna’s perspective) but I still don’t have an explicit answer to my question unfortunately, unless I’m missing something. I’m gonna go ahead and choose to get the extra information from managers, or at least, as much as I can. On a previous request from Anna, I will keep the information for student artists at just their contact details. I’ll keep checking back here in the meantime in case you guys change your mind.
Out of curiosity, have you read the list on the research page Amir?

-Amir-

Hey Cat, sorry for not exactly attending to your question!
I have recently gotten in contact with Natalia and she advised us to focus on our own team tasks.

It is preferable to contact the artists/managers once we have settled on the performance schedule/ themes/ strategy/ artists!

I did check the list of artists, thank you! I will check their performances later today and keep them in circulation for Curating.
We will hold a Curators meeting soon to come to consensus.

I've gone through my list of potential artists with the exception of Hatsune Miku. I'll admit, I only didn't follow through with finding details because I personally think it will be too difficult. Do you still want information for her?

2. Am about to contact the Melbourne Museum regarding permission to filming/perform, but I need to give an indication of sound levels. Are you thinking band, dancer, spoken word artist, or something else? Let me know when you're decided.

-Amir-

Hello Cat.
In as much as Hatsune Miku is thrilling and revolutionary, unfortunately she has no place in our performance, especially since the performance is very much about audience-artist interaction. So we won't be needing any more information about her.

The dates in which the program and artists should be determined have altered after yesterday's conference, urging us to work quicker than previously expected/agreed upon.
So we are still not sure regarding the artists/performances, but this should be figured out by 9th of April. However, we will work on getting this done as soon as possible.

I will get in touch with the team, and as soon as we have a clearer image of the instruments I will let you know.
For now, it would be a pianist in front of shrine of remembrance or Melbourne Museum. Or is there one of those “play me” pianos in that area?

Hey Cat, yes, the idea was keyboard player (There is no play-me piano, and the idea of having a piano or grand piano would be beautiful, but costly). However the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music has expressed interest in working with us. We are still waiting on their reply/confirmation, holidays haven't been of much assistance. By the 9th Apr however, the details of whether its the classical pianist or a small group from the MCM will be confirmed. I'll let you know soon as it's confirmed.
-Amir-

New question!
3. Are Parliament and industrial locations now off the table?

This idea might be off the table as the second performance will be an illustrator doing her art live from New Mexico. This has been confirmed.
