MYP Design is separated from other courses within the MYP because it attempts to convey the necessary skills in a manner that doesn't rely on being taught information but rather how to fix mistakes. I believe that this is a form of learning that should be implemented across all subjects as I think that the concept of knowing how to fix something if done wrong is better than knowing how to do it right.

While doing MYP design you get to be as creative as you want, but you have guidelines set at the beginning that are easy to follow. The grading is simple and you don't have to stop sometimes and take a test.

You have a specific process in MYP Design that you must follow and you get graded on each part over the time of the process. You are told what to do over each lesson, meaning that they tell you you have 3 lessons for this, and 3 lessons for that. They have a process wheel which tells exactly what to do so it is easier to follow and the assessments are during the whole rotation.

In MYP Design, you need a lot of creativity but you need to follow a certain type of process. The MYP Design includes Inquiring and Analysing where you need to investigate other products and describe things you can use from existing products and explaining why. In the Developing Ideas section, you need to develop a design specification and several more. There are also two more things you need to do in the design cycle (Creating the Solution and Evaluating).

The MYP design is different from other MYP classes because of the creating. In no other class we do that we might do posters or we do presentations but we don't use materials like wood to create things that are really useful to us or our friends and family. Also it helps us to be able to work with natural materials. We also did a bookend that I was able to use on my bookshelf and there I did not only learn how to use wood but I also learned how to paint a unusual canvas. This also helped improving my art skills which is also a good thing about MYP design. In no other subject I can apply the skills that I learned in a other class.

In the MYP, we do make far more products that we can actually use. For example, in 6th grade we made a thermometer, and a bookend. I actually did use it and it is on my shelf at home. The birdhouse was fun to make because we get to use our own theme too. The design cycle helps us organize our work.

Design is different compared to other subjects because all other subjects require us to learn with our mind. In design however, we learn that all things we theoretically know from other subjects aren't always applicable in some cases. An example of this is that is science class tells us that (i.e voltage) is always distributed equally among all lamps in a series circuit. Yet when we do a practical test, these results are often wonky. This is similar to design where we learn how we expect something to work but until we try it ourselves, we'll never know what the experience is like.
