There was very little and unfair pay for the workers. They could go on strike but they could be replaced easily. The working conditions were beyond poor and it was very deadly for just measly pay. Many employers hired children because they were cheap and could do jobs that required small fingers. Many times however, fingers and other limbs were snapped off.

Source: Homestead strike/outcome, Child labor 1900

Most women either worked at a factory like the rest of the family or stayed home and took care of the house and children. But almost every single day their drunk husband would come home drunk and maybe high on cocaine. The women had no money to feed the children because it was squandered by the husband at the local saloon. The women couldn't divorce and it was extremely difficult for a woman to find work.

Source: Prohibition: A film by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick.

Historical Lesson

The historical lesson here is don't let money corrupt you. If you look at Vanderbilt, Carnegie, Rockefeller, and the other businessmen during the Gilded Age, they let money corrupt their decisions. They were the ones who set up poor wages/working conditions, and used shady business tactics just to strike it rich.
