If you want to get away from the crowds though, the Englischer Garten is the place to go. 

It’s an enormous  park stretching for five kilometres in the centre of Munich.

Many people treat this park as their front lawn and families and friends come here to play, relax or go for a walk. 

The Chinesischer Turm, Chinese pagoda at the heart of the Englischer Garten is a popular place for families to meet … and of course for a drink.

The Borstei is a housing development in the North of Munich built by Bernhard Borst in the 1920’s. It was his vision to create an ideal living environment for the urban middle classes. 

With the Borstei, the architect tried to combine the luxury of a country house  with the practicality of a flat. 

Heating was provided by a central boiler and each apartment had its own bathroom with hot water - a revolution at the time.

Bernhard Borst was passionate about art and wanted to create an inspirational setting for his tenants. Original sculptures are placed in the carefully designed gardens of the Borstei. 

What he created here was an independent small town with its own shops, post office and kindergartens.   

His daughter Gertraud Borst still lives here today.

He wanted the Borstei to be an alternative to detached family houses. Previously he had built about 100 detached houses and he saw how difficult it was for women to keep the household going. He thought if he created Kindergartens the mothers could be at home without worrying about their children.

Es ist besonders angenehm, hier zu wohnen, weil die Borstei in München eigentlich wie ein kleines Dorf ist. Jeder kennt jeden, die Kinder gehen zu Nachbarn, die Mütter oder die anderen Bewohner wissen Bescheid, wo die Kinder hingehören. Wenn irgendetwas passiert, dann rufen sie an.

Und wir haben auch sehr schöne Innenhöfe, ja, es ist einfach schön, macht Spaß.

Man kommt hier rein von der Stadt, wo es laut ist, und es ist wie eine Oase, es ist einfach, als wie wenn man in eine andere Welt kommt.
