Marshall Plan (1947)

The Marshall Plan was created to prevent vulnerable European countries from turning to communist dictators for aid after the war. The US provided countries in Western Europe with a total of $17 billion of aid which helped them rebuild and avoid turning to communism.

Cuban Missile Crisis(1962)

Tensions almost boiled over in Cuba, when Soviet missiles were found being constructed and sent to Cuba. Because of its location and how close it was to the mainland US, president Kennedy and premier Khrushchev were extremely close to starting a nuclear war. After lots of negotiations, the Soviets back out of Cuba and the US removed their missiles from Turkey.

Vietnam War(1954-1974)

Vietnam gained their independence from France, however they struggled to govern themselves, splitting the North into communist Vietnam and the South into non-communist. The US supported the South and sent troops as well as lots of money to combat Soviet and China backed North Vietnam. Eventually, South Vietnam fell to communism and the US withdrew with a damaged global image.

After the Soviets launched Sputnik to the moon, the US decided their goal was to be the first to put a human on the moon, pouring billions of dollars into space education for this opportunity. They launched on July 16, and splashed down on July 24.

Berlin Airlift (1945-1949)

Once the war came to an end, communist powers took over the Eastern half of Germany and Berlin while Capitalist powers took over the Western parts. The Berlin Airlift came as a result of Joseph Stalin's dissatisfaction of communism territory in Berlin and his desire to have control over all of it. In protest with capitalist powers, he cut off all resources from the Eastern side to the Western side, leaving Germans in the Western side in need of food, oil, etc. The US started to airlift these resources to West Berliners to prevent them from turning to Stalin.

Fall of the Berlin Wall(1989)

When Korea was liberated from the Japanese, the Soviet Union and U.S decided to split Korea and own them. Next the North Korean leader, Kim ll sung, wanted to reunify Korea back again. So he sent a surprise invasion to attack South Korea. The U.S was able to counter attack North Korea and there was a full out proxy war. The USSR supports North Korea and U.S with UN help support South Korea. The war was a tie and a demilitarized zone separated from them.

Red Scare - McCarthyism

A second wave of the Red Scare swept over the US because of successful communist rebellions in other places of the world. Trails of communist government officials led to their executions, and the formation of the House Un-American Activities Committee(HUAC). This resulted in numerous officials being investigated, and one politician, Senator Joseph McCarthy accused many and had a long list. The charges were never proven and he recklessly destroyed the careers of many people.
