The new roles they were left with showed that women were reliable which helped them win the right to vote. Women also became bolder and left their traditional ways and took up things like looser and shorter garments along with "bobbed" hairstyles. They began do drink and smoke and drive in public. Professions like medicine and education began to open up for women too.

On June 28, 1914, Archduke Ferdinand and his wife Sophie, the Austro-Hugarian throne, went on a trip to Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia. Wile cruising the streets of Sarajevo, they were both shot by a 19 year old Serbian named Gavrilo Princip who was a member of secret society called The Black Hand which was committed to ridding Bosnia of Austrian rule. Since the assassin was Serbian, Austria wanted to punish Serbia with many demands. Serbia acknowledged that refusing these demands would lead to war with potent Austria, so they accepted most demands, Serbia wanted to negotiate more, but Austria did not. So on the day of July 28, Austria declared war to Serbia. Serbia was not standing alone though since they are allied with Russia. Russia sent troops to the Austrian border and war has begun in Europe.

Germany and the Soviet Union had negotiated and signed a ten-year nonaggression pact and agreed to divide Poland between them. On September 1, 1939, Hitler arranged a surprise attack and bombed Warsaw, Poland's capital, to conquer Poland. this invasion was also a chance for Hitler to try a new attack strategy, the blitzkrieg. It involved using airplanes and tanks, followed by massive infantry forces, to take enemy defenders by surprise and quickly overwhelm them. This strategy succeeded. Later on September 3rd, France and Great Britain declared war on Germany.

Like Hitler and Mussolini, Japan’s militarists were extreme nationalists. They wanted to solve the country’s economic problems through foreign expansion. They planned a Pacific empire that included a conquered China. The empire would provide Japan with raw materials and markets for its goods. It would also give Japan a larger population. Japanese businesses had invested heavily in China’s northeast province, Manchuria. It was an area rich in iron and coal. In The League’s failure to stop the Japanese encouraged European Fascists to plan aggression of their own. The Italian leader Mussolini dreamed of building a colonial empire in Africa like those of Britain and France 1931, the Japanese army seized Manchuria.

The United States was not in the war at first, but they did help the Allies by selling them arms and lent them money. This led to the creation of the Atlantic Charter that sends British cargo ships that had U.S. arms. German submarines sunk these cargo ships and sunk a U.S. destroyer. This did not cause the United States to join the war. Americans cracked Japanese codes and found out about their plans for Southeast Asia. If Japan conquered European colonies there, this would threaten the American-controlled Philippine Islands and Guam. So the U.S. government sent help to China to be more resistant against Japan. Then President Roosevelt cut off oil shipments to Japan. Japan has planed a surprise attack on the U.S. fleet in Hawaii. So on December 7, 1941, it was a horrible day for Americans, many people died on Pearl Harbor. On the day of December 7, 1941, President Roosevelt declared war on Japan.

European nations had argued for a while now, and to stop this a compromise called The Treaty of Versailles was created. This treaty led to the League of Nations, a league that was an international association whose goal would be to keep peace among nations. The treaty did not last for long though, it had caused bitterness and betrayal between these nations. Sure it did end World War 1, but this treaty set the stage for World War II. Germany was punished and had to pay reparations to the Allies during this treaty though. Then the United States rejected this compromise. The U.S. didn't want to get more involved in European affairs. Germany was loosing power while the United States was gaining power by stepping back onpunishing Germany with the Allies and being independent.

The Spanish flu, as it was popularly known, hit England and India in May. By the fall, it had spread through Europe, Russia, Asia, and to the United States. The influenza epidemic killed soldiers and civilians alike. In India, at least 12 million people died of influenza. In Berlin, on a single day in October, 1,500 people died. In the end, this global epidemic was more destructive than the war itself, killing 20 million people worldwide.
