I consider M.O. and her poetry to be my life-coach. 
About a week before we left Archer, Kim Smith kindly gifted me this collection of Mary Oliver's essays, Upstream.
These essays are about about how we find ourselves through experiences where we actually lose ourselves. 
"I had to go out into the world and see it and hear it and react to it, before I knew at all who I was, what I was, what I wanted to be." 
As per usual, M.O.'s deep examination of nature drives her style, and it's just a beautiful meditation to read her thoughtful prose.

The title itself was enough to inspire curiosity as to what this book's contents consisted of.  Especially in the social and political climate we are currently in.  However this book really looked at racism in a completely different perspective for those who wish to distance themselves from it all together.  It opens a deeper look into our society's take on racial divides and classism, and provides a great perspective and opinion on what it would take to truly eradicate racism from our way of life.

The debut novel is based on a fantasy version of Ancient China, taking inspiration from China's history to craft a harrowing fantasy world full of shamans and war. The book tackles a lot of really intense elements and while it is YA, I would recommend mainly highschool students/8th graders read this because of the graphic content. A thrilling story of an underdog heroine and the choices one must make in war- I highly recommend!
