It is extremely important to practice cultural safety at an RN, and the fundamentals of that is understanding different cultures. Some cultures place individuals at greater disadvantages than others. This weeks module was interesting and highlighted many Indigenous and non-Indigenous health gaps in Australia like life expectancy, child mortality etc. I have had previous studies in social science, so I knew about the social and economic impact of colonisation. However, I liked re learning all my previous knowledge about the intergenerational trauma contributing to Indigenous health.

The shocker I leant throughout this module was that Cataracts was very common among Indigenous people and that impairment and blindness were three times higher in Indigenous people compared to non-Indigenous people.

This module was incredibly important as it highlighted the importance of practising with cultural safety. It also showed the massive disparity in health outcomes of Aboriginal and Torris Strait Islander people in Australia. Through being presented systemic challenges and historical injustices that continue to impact affect the First Nations people. This knowledge presented in the module allows for nurses to practice in way that will be culturally sensitive in order to empower Australian Indigenous communities in their decision making. It also highlighted how far we still have to go despite there being small changes especially with rates of conditions like RHD and trachoma which aren’t as statistically prevalent in non-Indigenous Australian population. this module about indigenous health broadened my perspective about the disparities faced by indigenous Australians. We need to be able to build healthy and therapeutic connections with the individuals we care for in order to properly deliver person-centered care. This results from treating each person with respect, regardless of their colour, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, age, etc. It is possible to encourage someone to feel receptive to getting therapy by establishing a secure and trusting atmosphere for them and by demonstrating respect for and appreciation of their culture, beliefs, and values.

There has to be more time, money and interventions implemented for the health and wellbeing of First Nations Peoples. I though I knew much about the Gap in health that exists between First Nations Peoples and non-Indigenous Australians, however, this module has informed that (unfortunately) the Gap is much complex and broader than I thought. In addition, it has also taught me that implementing cultural awareness and safety is a MUST when caring for our First Nations People - especially since the Gap is also caused by lack of adequate care-delivery methods within a range of health care services, and by health care professionals.

It is clear that disparities exist between the Indigenous and non Indigenous Australian. Closing the health gap will take a long time and healthcare staff must be aware of the steps that can be taken to improve the outcomes of all with equity in mind. Living in crowded conditions can compound certain health risks. A lack of appropriate and available services may be a factor in health outcomes. Lastly a lack of trust of the healthcare industry because of past atrocities puts Indigenous Australians at risk of the healthcare they need and deserve. Giving individuals what they require for health is referred to as equity, whereas treating everyone equally is referred to as equality. Important as future nurses that we are aware and are able to recognise when our patients may need some extra support in either educating or maintaining their health just from where they live i.e remote or very remote areas. This Module has provided eye opening information on the challenges our Indigenous Australians face and in turn those that care for them. So much ignorance and misunderstanding when the aim was to help, and the untold damage that plays out in their lives. How can we link them to country in a meaningful way that feeds their souls and aid healing. Clearly more of the same as to what we are doing is not closing the gaps. More intuitive research with mobs? Even the food stores made me think, what about meals prepared by the Aunties and Uncles. Perhaps giving purpose to communities to provide culturally appropriate foods to nourish and sustain, connecting to country, yarning, mentoring and reducing reliance on overly processed foods and in turn increasing health.

Progress to date has been slow tracking to targets. Who is guiding the set goals? Are they looking at the core issues? What do Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people see as the solution?

So much unknown to date, to learn and assimilate, with nurses at the forefront of creating and maintaining culturally safe relationships with the aim to improved physical and mental health.

Why is cultural safety important in professional Nursing Practice?

If the patient feels culturally safe in approaching and receiving care, the outcomes for increased health and wellbeing are increased. As the patient feels safe, dialogue is two way and authentic.

The relationship between the care giver and care receiver is pivotal to the best health outcomes. It is built on trust, and often needs to be established quickly and all efforts in nursing practice must not knowingly undermine it.

Everyone’s culture deserves respect and health professionals particularly need to provide a safe place for those requiring care to express their culture and beliefs.

What does cultural safety mean to you as a future RN?

It helps direct the care so it aligns and harmonises with the patient’s needs, beliefs and values. It’s holistic nursing. As an RN, we see the person in all facets, not with our, or society’s, overlay, and not just clinically.
