It is extremely important to understand the health disparities between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. To inform our practice, we must deliver person-centred care and approach indigenous peoples needs with a holistic and respectful manner. Acknowledging past injustices in this country's shared history is vital in taking those first steps towards equality.

Acknowledgement of their cultural and historical backgrounds to provide trauma informed care, bring health care equity towards the community, ensure equality among them and create a cultural safety environment. This is a step up of adopting cultural safety where we take into account of people’s unique needs, not just providing care regardless differences. It is considered as a form of racism because of its dismissing personal experiences. Therefore, self-reflection, cultural self-awareness and understanding the impacts of personal cultural on care are vital to help closing the gap of health conditions between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people

It is clear that there is much work to be done in helping the Indigenous people of Australia to thrive in their overall health. It is important for community health care nurses to be aware of the health risks Indigenous Australians face and to try and 'close the gap' wherever possible. Equity is not providing the same care to everyone, but rather providing specialised care based on the needs of the individual.

From what we have been taught in this module and information and experiences we have seen in life Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are severely disadvantaged in life. They are disadvantaged in many areas and it is important for nurses to know that and how to help Indigenous people. Nurses need to know information and the health risk factors that Indigenous people face and how to treat them with respect. To respect their culture, rights and values even if they are different from the nurses. Indigenous people from nurses need to be treated the same as everyone else and not disadvantaged by others

There are huge health inequities that are experienced as well as past traumas which have affected the community immensely. Being able to provide trauma informed care and create a culturally safe and welcoming environment can help to limit the health inequities felt by these individuals. Learning about the Close the Gap campaign and hearing stories from individuals was able to increase my knowledge and reflect on how I want to be as a nurse.

Within Australia, it is imperative that the health system realises and understands the Indigenous Custodians of this land, especially their morals, values, and cultural beliefs. By having a well rounded understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, we can begin to have a level of mutual ground and a mutual understanding for one another, and see where each other is coming from in a non-judgemental, non-discriminatory way. It is so important that us nurses respect the cultural differences and always put the patients' needs forwards, no matter their culture and beliefs. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have been disadvantaged their whole life where flow on effects from previous generations have created trauma (intergenerational trauma), and it is important that the health system recognises that and the predisposed ideologies that Indigenous Australians may have of nurses and the medical field (it's only natural)

It has highlighted how important it is to contribute to closing the gap between cultural disparity and how we can help do this as a health professional. As nurses we must never have any prejudice, treating every patient the same, with the same level of care, dignity and with personalised care. This was a very eye-opening module.

Very interesting topic.

Cultural sensitivity and competency is essential for healthcare workers (and in everyday life). To successfully provide person-centred care, we must be able to establish healthful and therapeutic relationships with the people we care for. This comes from respecting them as an individual irrespective of their race, ethnicity, sexual identity, gender, age, etc. Showing respect and awareness of a person's culture, beliefs and values helps to create a safe and trusting environment for them and to potentially help them feel open to receiving treatment.

As there was historically inequality and discrimination in healthcare in Australia, people of cultural and linguistically diverse backgrounds - particularly targeted at the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, we need to be understanding of people who may have had negative experiences with the healthcare system that has led to hesitations and mistrust.

Reflecting on this brings to light the systemic challenges and historical injustices that continue to affect these communities. Also, it highlights the need for comprehensive, culturally sensitive approach that empowers Indigenous communities in decision making and health care delivery. I feel that the state of Indigenous and rural remote health for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia is a deeply rooted issue. In order to address disparities, the focus should be on recognising historical injustice, systemic barriers for example to foster a more equitable and healthier future.

It is extremely important to practice cultural safety at an RN, and the fundamentals of that is understanding different cultures. Some cultures place individuals at greater disadvantages than others. For example, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders have higher morbidity and mortality rates, and shorter life expectancy than other non-Indigenous Australians. You should always conduct interact with people in care care in a respectful way bit always in a manner that shows you are open to developing your knowledge and understanding of different cultures and their diverse needs.

Numerous health conditions, such as obesity, poor nutrition, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and dental problems, are all significantly impacted by this issue. Underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive policies and interventions to improve food supply, promote healthy eating habits, and address the root causes of these health disparities among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is the limited access to fresh and nourishing food in many communities, which is exacerbated by socioeconomic factors and subpar living conditions.

Compared to major cities, the stark contrast in mortality and morbidity rates between remote and very remote areas underscores the disparities in healthcare access and outcomes. Moreover, the geographical distribution of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations reflects the challenges Indigenous communities face, with higher percentages residing in more remote areas. Addressing these disparities requires targeted policies and resources to ensure equitable access to healthcare and improved living conditions nationwide.

This module highlighted the impact of culture and diversity. It is important to practice cultural safety to build therapeutical relationships with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and uplift them. It’s important to understand that the events in their history have affected them physically and mentally through generations. Acknowledging their cultural and historical background, providing person-centred care, and bringing healthcare equity can help to create a culturally safe environment. Cultural awareness, self-reflection and providing care that is unique to their needs prove to be significant to bring cultural safety in nursing practice. Cultural safety as a future registered nurse means creating and practicing in an environment which is free of any sorts of discrimination based on one’s culture, taking in account of their unique needs and providing safe environment for people to express their needs. This will eventually lead to close the gap between health conditions of indigenous and non-indigenous people.

In addition, it has also taught me that implementing cultural awareness and safety is a MUST when caring for our First Nations People - especially since the Gap is also caused by lack of adequate care-delivery methods within a range of health care services, and by health care professionals.

Closing the health gap will take a long time and healthcare staff must be aware of the steps that can be taken to improve the outcomes of all with equity in mind. Living in crowded conditions can compound certain health risks. A lack of appropriate and available services may be a factor in health outcomes. Lastly a lack of trust of the healthcare industry because of past atrocities puts Indigenous Australians at risk of the healthcare they need and deserve. I was taken aback to see the statistics and, although I was aware that Indigenous Australians were not afforded the same outcomes, I was horrified at the shear numbers in relation to morbidity and mortality.

This Module has provided eye opening information on the challenges our Indigenous Australians face and in turn those that care for them. So much ignorance and misunderstanding when the aim was to help, and the untold damage that plays out in their lives. How can we link them to country in a meaningful way that feeds their souls and aid healing. Clearly more of the same as to what we are doing is not closing the gaps. More intuitive research with mobs? Even the food stores made me think, what about meals prepared by the Aunties and Uncles. Perhaps giving purpose to communities to provide culturally appropriate foods to nourish and sustain, connecting to country, yarning, mentoring and reducing reliance on overly processed foods and in turn increasing health.

Progress to date has been slow tracking to targets. Who is guiding the set goals? Are they looking at the core issues? What do Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people see as the solution?

So much unknown to date, to learn and assimilate, with nurses at the forefront of creating and maintaining culturally safe relationships with the aim to improved physical and mental health.

Cultural Safety –

Why is cultural safety important in professional Nursing Practice?

If the patient feels culturally safe in approaching and receiving care, the outcomes for increased health and wellbeing are increased. As the patient feels safe, dialogue is two way and authentic.

The relationship between the care giver and care receiver is pivotal to the best health outcomes. It is built on trust, and often needs to be established quickly and all efforts in nursing practice must not knowingly undermine it.

Everyone’s culture deserves respect and health professionals particularly need to provide a safe place for those requiring care to express their culture and beliefs.

What does cultural safety mean to you as a future RN?

It helps direct the care so it aligns and harmonises with the patient’s needs, beliefs and values. It’s holistic nursing. As an RN, we see the person in all facets, not with our, or society’s, overlay, and not just clinically.

I have learnt that health care is not a one shoe fits all, it is not about the health practitioner and their beliefs/culture but instead about the person in care and viewing that person as a unique individual with unique and individual wants and needs. I have learnt throughout this semester that being a nurse is not only about providing the best health care and knowledge available for each individual but also about viewing the person in care as just that, a person, someone with feelings and their own belief systems. I have learnt to never make assumptions and assume you know or even a family member knows what's best for someone else.
