1. Rubdy made strong case pertaining integrating other cultural materials (eg: Asian and SEA literature) in construction of textbook especially in ESL/EFL environment.

2. Main Reason:
- promotes cross-cultural tolerance and understanding (which often neglected by textbook writers)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Considering all the arguments given by Rubdy, I will compare the arguments with Malaysian context. My fellow classmates, feel free to contribute your opinion.

a. Based on my interpretation, we often considered ESL teachers (in Malaysian context) are well verse with culture from Inner Circle (IC) English speaking countries such as United Kingdom, USA, Canada, New Zealand, Australia. Well, I would agree why people would assumed this this because our government have been sending a lot of teachers to study overseas especially UK, Australia and New Zealand and foreign universities from these countries sometimes collaborated with local teacher training centres IPGs.

b. However after graduation, not all teachers are lucky to be posted in the city. Some of them had to serve their first few years of teaching at rural areas. Considering the fact that they already "full" and knowledgeable enough with native speakers' culture, there shouldn't be a problem for them to integrate their knowledge about the cultures of Inner Circle countries.

c. Even if they are very knowledgeable about the cultures of Inner Circles countries, but teachers and students will have limited worldview as they only rely on the cultural knowledge from IC countries. As a result, they are slowly putting students' mindset that is not open or more accepting to other cultures.

d. In Malaysia ESL context, we are also often appreciate or preferred western literature than the local and sadly local literature often downplayed. It is very sad to admit that universities often put more emphasis on western literature such as Shakespeare to English major students and most of the reference were rarely touched on local literature writers such as Sandy Gall, Dulcie Gray, Tan Twan Eng and many more.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear fellow classmates, what do you think of our literature materials that been used in Malaysia education system? There are few local writers were featured in our literature materials. Was it enough to create cross-cultural understanding as proposed by Rubdy in this paper? Feel free to comment!

Though I have long since saw the light of current literature materials in our country, I can only speak of my own experience. For me, the most exciting kind of literature is the one where you can connect to and relate with. The feeling of getting to know the other cultures in this country is very eye-opening and also very refreshing. As opposed to the literature from the inner circle countries. Of which even some of the things that were mentioned in the literature was lost to me without the aid of Internet or various history book. Of course the amount of local literature used in Malaysia's education is not enough. Why learn about some horse named 'Black Beauty' when you can learn about the various races and cultures in Malaysia? In my opinion, these local literature should be the focus of our education system seeing as how they can educate the youngsters to become culturally sensitive.
