Elizabeth bishop was raised in a broken home. Her father died before she was a year old and her mother was committed to a mental hospital when she was five year old. She moved to the keys in 1936 where she wrote the poems for her first volume published in 1946 which included the fish. Elizabeth was a writer as well as a poet and she was known for her ability to capture an image with words in her poems. Her work was also known for its appreciation of the small things in life or care for the small things of the world. Her verse is marked by precise descriptions of the physical world and an air of poetic serenity, but her underlying themes include the struggle to find a sense of belonging, and the human experiences of grief and longing. Her sharp-eyes poems, full of vivid images and apt metaphors, have influenced the work of other poets, among them her friends Randall Jarell and Robert Lowell

The culture of technology had just started to emerge.More and more people had televisions into their homes.
imagery

the author uses ample amounts of imagery in this poem to create emotions in the readers. For example the author describes the fish right after she catches it by saying, " he hung a grunting weight, battered and venerable and homely." By saying this she is instilling the thought of a great fish that is old wise and should be respected. Her use of diction is shown in this quote as well by the use of word " venerable". She also states that " his brown skin hung in strips like ancient wallpaper. We see the fish as being very old because of the comparison to the image of ancient wallpaper. Other important uses of imagery are, "the frightening gills, fresh and crisp with blood, that can cut so badly", "grim, wet and weapon like", " where oil had spread a rainbow around the rusted engine to the bailer rusted orange, the sun cracked thwarts, the oarlocks on their strings, the gunnels-until everything was rainbow, rainbow, rainbow". All of these quotes are used to create vivid images that in turn create feelings of sorrow for the fish, and then at the end create a feeling of ease and happiness which prepares us for the end where she releases the fish.

This poem uses word choice to create emotions as well as images. For example the authors use of the word venerable immediately creates a feeling of respect that is demanded by the author for the fish. This feeling of respect makes the feeling of sorrow for the fish have a greater impact. She creates this feelings of sorrow and respect for the fish by using words such as, terrible, ancient, infested, frightening, shallower, sullen, weapon like, and like medals. Useing the phrase "like medals" to describe the hooks has a great impact on the reader. This shows us that the fish has overcome many obstacles as we associate the medals with victory we feel that the fish should be praised for the these victories. This is the same way that you would feel about a Superbowl winning team.

This poem describe the authors experience while fishing. She is surprised by the way catching the fish makes her feel. She repeats that the fish didn't fight much showing her disappointment. In a turn of events she starts to feel sorry for the fish at the end of her line. She slowly notices minute details about the fish that strengthen her feeling of sorrow for the fish. She then after contemplating it releases the fish back to where it came from.
