United States troops reaching 500,000 in Vietnam escalated the war leading to our troops becoming hated there. This was a burden on our military and we were running out of resources. The war led to an increase on casualties on both sides, and left long-lasting effects on Vietnam. After the U.S. withdrew forces, there were high mortality rates, environmental disasters, and socioeconomic dislocation, and this period was a dark period of the 1900's.

The Tet Offensive began on an important Vietnamese holiday. The goal was to launch a surprise attack on The American and Southern Vietnamese troops to depress the government of South Vietnam. It was a bloody battle and many lives were lost of both soldiers and non-combatants. The Viet Cong could no longer keep their captured territory. The Tet Offensive resulted in an insurgency in protests in the U.S., and President Johnson announced he wouldn't to be running for president again, as this event damaged U.S. government credibility and support for war effort.

The Battle of Hue began during the Tet Offensive in the 3rd biggest city in Vietnam which was near the border of the North and South. The purpose was for the North to take control of the city Hue as they wanted it as a symbol of political power. Many civilians were trapped in Hue, and many lives were lost.

The Battle of Saigon also took place during the Tet Offensive but this time the objective of the North Vietnamese troops was to capture South Vietnamese presidential palace in Saigon and to take away all their power to demonstrate their own capabilities. Armed soldiers from the North attacked the city and government buildings, but they were ultimately unsuccessful as they did not capture the presidential palace.
