I learned that art and music are powerful tools that can be used for fostering empathy. It allows for children to express themselves intuitively and encouraged a greater sense of openness to the two new different experiences which teaches about empathy. It also helps to create more understanding and realization that they can be used as a form of expression or outlet when they are feeling in a certain manner.

I think that this event impacted the children who participated greatly by encouraging them to put themselves in the shoes of Ray Charles and Wassily Kandinsky and learn to think how they would feel without their sight or with synesthesia while experiencing it for themselves. It also helps them to build their confidence and understanding that art is more than what they see, its also about what they feel and hear. It has definitely fostered a deeper sense of empathy as they painted without sight and connected their emotions to visual expression.

I have applied what I have learnt in my Y1 modules during this experience by letting children express themselves freely, explaining the purpose of doing the activities and asking questions to find out more about their art pieces. Besides, not having a standard way of how they should express themselves which limits their creativity but also not overwhelming them with a lot of materials, such as giving them only paints during the Ray Charles activity instead of a lot of other materials. Additionally, demonstrates how the activity can be done so that children can understand it visually instead of only through verbal instructions.
