Hello MAT Scholars! This is the official location where you will journal about your activities related to civic engagement. (Your contract says you have to complete this journal). As teachers, I want to see a level of self-reflection and engagement with your project that is meaningful and reflects what you're learning in class. What I want you to do is to think and write about the project you are working on, and then to answer the following questions:

1. Why did I choose this project?
2. What kind of difference do I hope to make?
3. With whom do I hope to make this difference (who will benefit)?
4. How is this project personal for me? (are you affected or have been affected in any way by the work you've chosen to do)?
5. When you started the project, what fears or concerns did you have?
6. As you work through civic engagement, what kind of changes do you see in yourself, in terms of leadership, knowledge, skills, abilities, and attitude?

Use this page to think about and journal, and be honest with yourself. I also expect all students to engage in academic honesty and not to copy off other Scholars' notes.

Proceeding from the spread of the phenomenon of students’ weakness in mathematics, and the control of mathematics anxiety over a large group of our students, I chose to volunteer to conduct private lessons in the form of additional classes aimed at addressing the weakness in basic skills in mathematics, without which the student cannot understand the material, or builds new information. I actually started last week with the Tawjihi students, because I found them urgently needing to address the weaknesses, so that they could join their colleagues, after noticing a significant decline in the achievement of these students, I started with them a comprehensive review of the concepts and basic skills needed. It relied on individual, dual and group education, and that was outside school hours in the school. The meeting lasted 3 hours for the first time on Tuesday, the eighth of February, and the second meeting was on Thursday the tenth of February and lasted another 3 hours.

My civic engagement activities are divided into two. First i arranged a visit from AQB to my school, and second i'm planning to work with 9th graders in my school to better inform them about the dangers of bullying.
I have done the former activity, and planning to do the latter in the comming week.
As part of my civic engagement, i have collaborated with Mr. Ahmad Hmeedat and arranged an AQB visit to the school i teach in "Greek Catholic Patriarchate School" in Bethlehem - Beit Sahour. Mr Ahmad and his colleagues gave a short presentation to Tawjihi students about the programs that AQB offers for new BA students. The presentation aimed to give Tawjihi students an insight on the opportunities that students can get once they graduate high school.
I hope that students from my school would choose the AQB program and benefit from the study program as the curriculum is superior to other competing universities in the country. Students will also have a chance to study with the best. Plus, a degree from AQB means something in the job interviews, and will open doors to interesting places once they earn it.
As i worked through this civic engagement i know that i developed and useed knowledge, skills, and voice to cultivate positive change.
Participation in this civic engagement activity has helped me become better informed about AQB.

"Let's start early" is the title of the activities that I have started to conduct. Those activities are part of an intervention program that aims to remedy the weakness of Eighth-grade students in the basics of mathematics at Sarah Secondary School. I noticed the need to implement this program because of my work as a Physics teacher for the Tenth grade in the school, and I discovered that one of the most important reasons for the poor achievement in Physics for secondary school students is due to the weak foundation in basic arithmetic and mathematical operations. Therefore, I decided to perform a remedy plan that targets younger students to fill the gap at an early stage before it gets worse. I chose to work with Eighth-grade students because they are the youngest in my school. Consequently, I conducted a diagnostic test for Eighth-graders to identify the students who suffer from basic weakness in mathematical operations, and currently I have started using my free time at school to implement the plan with the selected students. At the beginning, I thought that the students were the only beneficiaries, but I found myself spending an enjoyable time in education outside the framework of the prescribed curriculum; What an interesting start!

This work will be in March and then evaluate the role that I play Use it as a teacher in developing students' skills
As for the second project that I seek to work on, it is a comparison between schools and educational methods in Britain and also in Palestine. I will do a comprehensive research on the differences and differences and what we should as teachers in Palestine in order to develop education in Palestine

As a volunteer, I was excited to work with a center that aims to develop children's creativity away from the schools. Extracurricular activities are set up to allow the children to create and participate in various activities, such as Storytelling, Science experiments, Music adventures, and other activities. While volunteering there, I realized that each child is unique in his or her way. Every child can create if given the space and the chance to dig deep inside. In engaging these children in the different activities there, I was amazed at how quickly the time passed. They wanted me to read them stories, and they wanted me to make their many experiments. Through the small experiments we did together, they had learned many scientific concepts. This opportunity has given me a broader perspective on children's needs and concerns. Now I see my students in my class from a different perspective, because they are all unique and creative in their own
way.

Yasmine Mahariq
I’m writing about my experience in the ENTEC project as one of the participated mentees. The ENTEC project in the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Program at Al-Quds Bard College helped me to enhance my understanding of college subjects and courses. I have benefited from the great advice in my work as a teacher that was given to me while making regularly discussing the problems of teaching practices in the classroom.
Also, I attended several related workshops that discussed online teaching techniques during the pandemic. Synchronic education has been imposed on teachers because of the coronavirus spread around the world. So we find such a very good project to help us overcome these new and hard circumstances. For example, I started using the Wardwall site as a site for interactive games during classes on the Teams platform.
Furthermore, I attended most of the EAA workshops and meetings including the ones that relate to the Qatar National Library. Additionally, I took part in the Conversation Club that was held on last Spring term. It was a very good opportunity to enhance my level of English Language by practicing my English and boosting my teaching skills.
Moreover, I implemented a workshop about the “Higher Order Thinking skills” for my fellow school teachers. As well as that, I offered additional classes related to reading short stories for the first and second graders. I also offered additional classes to train the primary first graders to use the correct writing directions while writing in the English language.

For example; shyness, anxiety and pronunciation
the difference that i hoped to make; i went to organize some of dynamic procedures and techniques that may help and conquer their difficulties and shyness in their practice of .speaking inside class and in their day life
I hoped to make this difference with my students untill they can understand their lessons better than previous grades and improve their abilities in English as whole.
This project is very personal for me and i have been affected with it, through implementing this project and practicing it helped me in the manegment of the classroom and developing new strategies to deal with this kind of academic difficulties with my students.
I started with applying this project in the beginning of Spring2021 and I am still applying itand i am continuously on contact with my students about using this technique in their classes as well as PQ4R technique .
Of course , I developed my knowledge ,abilities and skills that help in improving the way of teaching for example; Hering Bone Tale, Reciprocal teaching, Role-play, Performance learning and Self Assessment.

While teaching secondary-school students, I always prefer to include and mention real-life examples of what I teach. One of the most effective ways I have been using through teaching adults is relating what the students know about certain terms and going deeply into their basic knowledge of certain issues.
A clear example is when I tell them about prefixes and suffixes. As a teacher of English as a second language, I try hard to make it simple as much as I can. The word 'market', for instance, can be used differently. Once it has '-ing', it can be used either as a noun, or a verb if there are verbs 'to be' before it. Sometimes we can add 'up-' to it to be 'upmarket' that means something expensive.
Talking about these forms of the word 'market', I get the students engaged through discussing each term with its use in various fields and situations.
All in all, I cannot imagine teaching or learning a second language without making use of reality and what exist in the students' lives.

I noticed during my work in Abu-Ali Iyad School that the school environment lacks colors and life, so I decided to improve the school environment by changing the shape of the empty walls by creating paintings that give hope and encourage diligence. Therefore, I engaged students in making the paintings under my supervision in order to increase the students’ motivation and their love for the school, which spreads an atmosphere of love, cooperation, and optimism within the participants.
I performed several steps to perform this initiative. First, I presented the idea to the class and other teachers in the school and they expressed their enthusiasm for this idea, after that I explored their artistic abilities and I found that there are some students who are talented in drawing, choosing colors, and design. Moreover, I engaged the whole class in choosing the desired drawings type through a pole, consequently. Consequently, based on the results of the voting, we chose the drawings that we will draw, and then the fun began using colors.
Before implementing this initiative, I did not imagine the pleasure that I would feel during its implementation, and I was afraid of the end result because of my average drawing abilities. However, soon after the start of the implementation of the initiative, the students and I had a wonderful time and this has even helped me to discover the hidden talents of the students, and the familiarity and cooperation increased among them.

Raghad Abu Salimah I will organize a series of workshops in order to enhance some students’ academic level and to foster their personalities to make them less introvert. In fact, I will apply different methods that I learn from my colleagues in Bard College to teach English language as a combination of four skills. Most importantly, the activities and meetings will be held at a public center so that all students can participate. Most significantly, I will not only what I have done in my case study, but I will also develop certain steps. Definitely, students’ levels will be checked after each workshop. Besides, one workshop will be organized in order to make introvert students more sociable so that they can benefit more from being in harmony with their colleagues. I am thinking to organize the las mentioned workshop before the academic ones to obtain better results. I think that I may encounter some obstacles due to the limited time that students have in vacation. Also, I don’t know how many students may register in these workshops. For me, the more the students register, the better collaborative positive atmosphere there will be.I am planning to give good students certificate of appreciation at the end of the workshops.

I attended the ENTEC program last year in the second semester with the best mentor Miss Fatimeh Mafarjeh for 20 hours, from February to August. She helped me a lot and answered all my questions, first of all I was not a full time teacher I went to schools as a volunteer (a part time teacher), we worked on Shulman's model, and we had to work on a case study on a problem of practice, first we explained the problem in a brief explanation, then we tried to found out strategies to solve the problem, also we had to write an annotated bibliography and a portfolio to explain every single thing we've worked on. After finishing this task she asked me to join two of my lessons , at that time we were using zoom because of COVID19, she gave me a very nice feedbacks and then we discussed some ideas. Our last meeting was also via zoom all the mentees with the mentor, she asked us about what we are planning to do with our students next year, what strategies to use, what do we want to improve in us as teachers and in our students.

Finally each of us told her about his/her opinion and provided that with worksheets.
For this semester as I mentioned before in the google form you sent that I'm working with 4 groups, each group contains 4 students as an after school teacher at Ras Al Amoud Al Shamelah Secondary Girls School for 36 hours, each week 4 classes. In this after school project, I desired to improve my students’ higher order thinking and help them express ideas that are organized, precise and sophisticated in their reading and speaking because today the world needs students whose ideas are focused and who are capable of explaining their ideas distinctly and passing them on efficiently. Therefore, developing my students’ abilities to express their ideas in a clear way that in the future will help them to become proficient individuals.

I aimed through implementing debates by using reading and speaking activities, and to develop student’s ability to remember, argumentative skills and their abilities in remembering to help my students develop their imagination and their higher order thinking including reading and speaking efficiency.

I expected this project to provide English language teachers and educators with a theoretical background that proves the effectiveness of the strategies in enhancing higher order thinking. Also, I expected it to provide a practical experience of performing such strategies so that curricula designers, English supervisors, English teachers, and decision-makers can take it into account. In addition, the results and findings of this study were anticipated to motivate English teachers and specialists and give them a perception of the importance of improving their students’ higher order thinking skills.

Also, this project can be proposed as an alternative learning technique for English teachers in implementing debate to promote student's higher order thinking skills. It could also be useful for course developers, educators, and practitioners in planning English lessons. Alongside that, it could be a springboard to further studies in implementing debate in the EFL context to develop speaking ability.

The Story behind My Classroom Project

I always remember being good in my English classes, never having to go through what other less-skilled students go through. But I particularly remember high school when I started taking my classes. I got a grasp of what to do and how to do it, but I had one problem, my teacher would show me my mistakes but she would not tell me what the mistake is or how to fix it.

At that time of my life, I believed I was doing something wrong, that my teacher knew what she was doing and that her way was the right way. I was convinced that this was the right way to enhance my progress. I would notice that each time I got many mistakes in my way of analyzing, evaluating, and creating my ideas and choices and the way of understanding the tasks, but I was never taught how to fix them. I remember that each time I got furious I would ask my teacher what was the problem and she would either tell me my ideas were not clear or the way of analyzing was not correct. I was just a teenager back then and her telling me my ideas are not clear would annoy me because I didn’t have enough experience to practice what she said, or what she gave us.

I thought that if I graduated high school the issue would be behind me, that BA teachers would help me understand these difficulties or mistakes more and that now I will be given the freedom to think creatively and have the ability to widen my thoughts in the topics I like or I am interested in. But to my surprise, this was not the case. The way my BA teachers gave me higher order thinking tasks was not so different from the one I had in high school. My professors would underline and re-correct my mistakes and then write what they think would sound better and then ask me to re- practice their notes. Back then, I promised myself that if I ever get to teach higher order thinking skills, this wouldn’t be the way I did it. And now, I find myself sometimes doing the same mistakes my teachers did, but I think that was the only way I knew. And after starting my journey in the MAT program, I got exposed to many activities that could improve my student’s higher order thinking.

Stories and Anecdotes Taken from My Notes, Reflections, and Data

Based on my own experience, I have noticed that almost all of my students find that higher order thinking reading and speaking activities as a whole to be challenging. They feel paralyzed; reading and speaking tasks are the monster that has been chasing them. At the school level, they get to take three classes to prepare them to read correctly, speak fluently and think critically in the class or events, however, when they reach the actual higher order thinking’s level in reading and speaking activities, their knowledge most of the time is nonexistent, I believe this is because of the way of their practicing that they had been given for the past three classes didn’t help them improve. They are stuck in the place where they began. The kind of activities we give was not sufficient enough to help them improve their higher order thinking level. They knew they made mistakes, but they did not know how to fix them.

The challenges that my students face are multi. The most obvious one is that they understand the ideas individually, but once they have to implement them all together they mess it all up. And just underlining their mistakes is not a solution; they don’t know what they did wrong. Another issue my students face is the limited resources to take ideas from, they lack the imagination that makes them able to describe details interestingly, and also they aren’t confident enough.

Asking them to read a passage and think about it freely. I have noticed that most of my students felt numb and paralyzed once they started talking of what they think about. In those moments they lost the connection between their minds and the tongue. Once they are asked to speak freely, for example, their questions would be all over the place; “What should we think specifically about? How can we start? Can you give us options? Can you show us an example?

Even when students are asked to read paragraphs about such topic and talk about it, they would say what they see on the surface not in depth; there wouldn’t be much explanation or going deep into the details. They could not draw an image with the right words or maybe they could not think of the right ideas. When asked to talk about what is a debate, for example, almost all of the students would talk about a conversation between two persons only. While they should be describing how a person should have a strong language and the strength to debate, someone who agrees and someone who disagree, how does he have the ability to prove his opinion? Most of my students are incapable of doing that.

Another challenge my students face with higher order thinking is the lack of organization, the flow of ideas. This problem is quite obvious with all students of almost all levels. I came to notice this issue on my first day teaching at Ras Al-Amoud Al Shamela Secondary School for girls. I asked students to talk about the advantages and disadvantages of Internet. Most of the students start asking what the topic means, and then they can’t make the connections between their ideas, they do not know how to order their ideas correctly. Add to that, they do not know how to express their ideas; I was shocked to find that most students misunderstanding the topic and others can’t analyze the advantages and disadvantages. It is like their minds stopped working and thus they stopped speaking. I tried to find an explanation for this and it wasn’t until we started with debating activities. Students can think creatively in such activities, add to that they can speak and some even have great accents. Using such debates activities means constructing ideas, analyzing them and try to make decisions about the given topics my students cannot do this. They are incapable of drawing and interpreting meanings and changing it into solid information. They have the insufficient vocabulary, problems understanding linguistic complexity including lexical and syntactic knowledge, language inaccessibility, and poor reading skills. Thus, they fail to understand the topics they are assigned to debate in.

I choose to participate in the Enhanced Network Teacher Education Capacity (ENTEC) Project at AQB as a mentee because I believe if you want to become a great teacher, you need to take every opportunity to learn yourself. The opportunity of being mentored by Ms. Maram Da’boub, an extremely experienced, intelligent, and creative teacher is helping me develop a variety of skills, not only as an educator; but also, as a future mentor. Her guidance includes but is not limited to, academic guidance, behavioral guidance, college assignments guidance, teacher portfolio feedback, feedback for videotaped classes, and a problem of practice regarding certain skills (e.g., writing). I could easily call her a role model, whenever I referred to her with questions related to the teachers’ community, she would answer me with a high sense of professionalism, guiding me to do what is perfectly right.

Our journey started with me asking her questions related to the grading system, and about her experience in the Palestinian schools when it comes to the standards with which we should evaluate our students. She introduced me to the summative and formative assessment tools. She explained to me the use of each one of them in enhancing the students’ work and providing them with crucial work feedback, differentiating between feedback and praise, and when to use each one of them.

We moved on to talk about a student who suffered from mental issues, and what are the best strategies to use with him in the classroom, so he calms down and pays more attention. I kept practicing the techniques Ms. Maram provided until I got the desired results.

Moreover, I asked her about good resources and websites that I could use for preparing the 1st graders’ phonics book. She provided me with websites that contain some educational phonics games, along with phonic rules and their sounds. She advised me to teach them something that suits their level, without making it too simple nor difficult, as the level of my students is already advanced.

I referred to Ms. Maram and took her advice on how to create the overall structure for one of my college assignments. She advised me to start by mentioning a specific theme, providing an explanation for it, and concluding with a piece of evidence from the main text. I followed her advice and ended up with a marvelous piece of literature.

Ms. Maram observed one of my videotaped lessons and provided me with feedback using Shulman’s Model of Teacher Development. She informed me about what went well, and about the things I should consider improving in the future. She is very tactful in delivering feedback, which is a skill I can proudly say that I learned from her. Her feedback was extremely helpful and helped me learn more about myself as a teacher. I am currently waiting impatiently for her second feedback on another lesson. This gave me a new opportunity in my school, I started mentoring some teachers, and they are happily taking my feedback into consideration.

Initially, I was afraid of the type of feedback I would receive from my mentor, as my experience in the past with teachers and their ability to give constructive criticism was poor. Since I did not know my mentor personally, I feared what her reaction to my questions and work would be. Thankfully, the reality turned out to be entirely different, and I could not have asked for a better, wiser, or more encouraging mentor than Ms. Maram.

Being mentored by Ms. Maram to develop my skills will help me in teaching the new generation the skills they will need. These students are going to be the builders of the future. If taught properly, it will help reform the society and produce individuals that are able to make a positive impact on the Palestinian culture and its system of education. Moreover, this will help me to enhance my performance as an educator, and assist me when I begin teaching college students, hopefully, in the near future. And along the way, help other teachers find their way and style of teaching in their own teaching and learning process.

Ms. Lamees Khawaja

I am absolutely certain that the basic step in creating an effective society begins with the education of children within the society. How nice it would be to create a generation that knows its rights and duties, in which the spirit of initiative and giving is embodied, without looking to get compensation for its work.It is enough for him to feel prid and the values that you instill in the same generation as a whole, so that he will be a role model for the next generation.I live in a society that I would say lacks many of the necessities of life. Personally, I may not lack anything, but I am part of the neighborhood in which I live, and I work as a teacher in a private school for orphans.Fortunately for me, working in this school gave me the opportunity to see a segment of society with special circumstances and unusual needs. That is because they are "orphaned students."Therefore, I chose to deal with them not only inside the school walls, but also outside it. By bringing a group from every class I teach, whether they are orphaned students or not, to give them remedial lessons in mathematics, free of charge and within my own time in my learning center. On the one hand, they are able to understand mathematics, and on the other hand, they feel that they are equal to other students inside the center and in the classroom. What aroused my emotion, unusually, is that some of these students suffer from a lack of inclusion and engagement with their surroundings, due to the loss of their mother or father, or both. You find them feeling that they lack the bond, the support. Therefore, I took it upon myself to help them engage in various school activities, coloring fences and walls, listening to their stories and sharing the details of their lives, as the difference and development happening here is not material, but psychological, educational and social. What I instill in the hearts of these students for cooperation and sharing is a large capital of which I am proud. They are able to dazzle you with their innocent ideas, and provide you with assistance according to their ability. As an educator and teacher, I make a strong person no matter what his circumstances, ready to face the harsh life, frankly I was very afraid that these students would be difficult to deal with, and I wondered over and over again whether there would be a difference in learning and sharing with them? Will they benefit from this experience?I'm still going through this experience with them, but my expectations were wrong about them, they are like musical notes, they need someone who knows how to play them.I do not deny that I make an effort with them, but the results and the feeling that I get in return are priceless. I became more skilled in dealing with all levels of students, and I found a special language for understanding with each one of them.I have the audacity to take adventure, take initiative and lead without hesitation until I become a " Other Suhair".

I am a technology teacher at Beit Al-Rush Al-Fouqa Secondary School for Boys, where I teach technology for grades five to ten, and since we do some arithmetic operations in conversions between different counting systems as well as conversions between different units of measurement, we need the student to be proficient in arithmetic operations Among these operations is multiplication, as the students in all the stages that I study suffer from lack of mastery or memorization of the multiplication table and consequently their inability to solve many arithmetic problems that need that. As a result of all these reasons and because I am a technology teacher, I had to find a solution to this problem from the beginning, and therefore I developed a simple program in the form of an educational game that I present to the mathematics teacher in the basic stage, especially in the second and third grades, where this program helps students to memorize the multiplication table in an atmosphere of fun And playing is far from the stress caused by learning the multiplication table in the traditional way This program was a seed in solving the problem of rolling from one basic stage to another, where we can see its results quickly due to its use of the style of play and competition among students.
and this is the link for the application
https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/110INokk82Pm2JJwmWweRbOpRSdwVsqsJ/edit?
usp=sharing&ouid=112339257969455560965&rtpof=true&sd=true
Note : when u open the link u don't have to put the password that required . just klick on download icon and get the file then u can use it

Because the beautiful handwriting is a mirror of the student, I worked to give all the school's students, whose number nearly 600 students from the seventh to the eleventh grade, a course to improve their handwriting through the English Language Club Facebook page that I created and worked with them through during the COVID-19 Epidemic period I used to send them YouTube videos teaching them to draw each letter every day. I used to send a video to teach one or two letters if they were the same and ask them to imitate that and write words as an application, here I intend to repeat the experiment, but this time I will conclude it with a competition for all the students who wish and honor the most beautiful handwriting.
I chose this work because the students in my school are diligent and their grades are excellent, but their handwriting is not good and sometimes incomprehensible, and this may affect their psyche and their grades negatively when they go to university and see their colleagues' beautiful handwriting. This also could help them work in this field in the future. What has become an obstacle is that not all the students realize the importance of this, so there will not be big number of those who will participate, and this is what actually happened. Personally, I trained with my students on some letters and I was happy to see the handwriting of some female students from different stages competing with my handwriting and we all enjoyed and benefited from the free time in this difficult circumstance, which was inspiring us to work

Laura Bishara

It couldn’t be more engaging!

Giving back to our community is very rewarding. Life is all about opportunities and if one doesn’t take the time to seize every opportunity that faces him, he/she will never be able to live the life at its fullest. I have always been a person who likes to be involved in my community. I volunteered in many activities through different stages of my life. I have been a scout leader for young girls and have done several leadership activities for young students and other great projects. Therefore, when I had the chance once again to do a civic engagement activity where I can benefit the people around me, I had to think deeply and choose wisely. Many projects came to my mind and I plan to proceed with them later in life. However, I decided for this project to pay back my students for they are the most in need of it.

My project offers after school activities (club) for young teenager students in the sixth and seventh class. The idea behind it is to provide the students with a space after school where they can do projects after school and improve their English language at the same time. I started by meeting these students once a month for 2 hours after school where I do different activities. For our first meeting we have done many ice-breaking activities and games. the games included outdoors competitions, sports activities and team building games. I designed these in a way to make them fun and interesting for my students. While applying them one could truly see the smiles on the students’ faces and laughter could be heard. All the instructions were given in the English language and so they were able to practice their language as well. In the second meeting we discussed fables. We spoke about what fables are and read in groups several Aesop’s fables. They then had to create their own fable, write it down and draw one scene of it. During the other meeting we have done things like biography bottles for their favorite characters from history and we have discussed several issue related to the stress they face in school and how to get rid of it.

I chose this project specifically because I feel that my students are going into so much stress recently and they are overwhelmed with the heavy school subjects. I also chose classes that are weaker than others in the English language. This after school program will make them realize that the English language can be fun and that through projects they can still learn something new. When I first came with the idea, I had some fears that students will not accept to stay after school for such English activities. I was also worried that they won’t like the new teaching style I am offering. Nevertheless, I experienced something completely different. I saw that students were very active and engaged, they were happy to come and learn something new. They were even excited to use the English language even more. Other students were asking to join this after school club and the school was excited with the results that they saw in the students. Doing the project, I had in mind to make a difference in the students’ attitude towards the English language and encourage them to use the English language more. I also aimed at getting the students out of the boring school routine into something fun and engaging.

This project was very personal to me as I have always had the idea of an after school English club in my school. I have been a fan of after school clubs and wanted to try the idea myself. Thanks to the scholarship and the fact that we need to do a civic engagement, I was finally able to make my idea see the light. This project was also a great help to me in my classes. I changed the students’ attitude toward the language and they were more involved with me in the English classes. They were now motivated and more active. Consequently, this civic engagement project has been a blast for me as well. I have seen my abilities to work on projects and developed related material on each lesson. To add, I saw myself as a person who is a decision maker and influencer of students’ lives. I discovered as well my skills of planning fun lessons and managing my time. I am looking forward to continuing this project throughout the next semester and I am planning to give a workshop for my English colleges at school on Project based learning and how they can use it in their lessons.

This will be a summary of my civic engagement and what I do to help my students. I didn't know exactly what I'm going to do about this kind of work at the beginning when Dr. Issam said that it should be about helping others, the first thing that comes to my mind was how I'm going to help people using my knowledge and what I'm good at. I was confused and didn't know what to do, but one day when I was giving my students a lesson about Palestine I noticed that some of the students were not able to read even the simple words although they were 10th graders. I was upset about that and I started to think about how can I help them be good at English. From there I started my journey with those students. The first thing that I have done was talk to the principal about the Idea which was giving an intensive course in English for the extremely weak students. The principal was very helpful and exciting about this idea and he permitted me to start my plan. I started by preparing the atmosphere for the course by selecting the material that I'm going to use and the classroom, then I moved to select the weakest students from all the 10th grades by giving them a general exam that focuses on the main four skills in English (listening, speaking, reading and writing). After that, I started giving the course to the selected students. I started on 15th January 3 times a week for 1 hour and still giving it until today

It removed a major obstacle from them, which is the financial obstacle, in light of the difficult circumstances we are going through at the present time, and the tendency to focus on academic achievement. my civic engagement was to lecture for first-year students at AQB University who participated in the English Conversation Club. It was a great experience I attached one of my students' reflections about my lecture above. I also attended the EAA Qatar scholarship meetings. In addition, I participate in the Mentor and Mentee course. I was a mentee student with teacher Maram Daboub. She was a great person I benefit a lot from her. She helped me and did great work. In addition, she evaluated one of my video lessons and gave me nice feedback. Besides, many workshops and meetings via what's app and zoom due to the Corona pandemic.

My colleague and I, science teachers at Sukaina Bint Al Hussein School, decided to carry out several activities with our students via Facebook. We chose this application, as the majority of students joined it and the ease of communication with it. We discussed three main activities to be able to acquire quality and unique artifacts that rely on
teamwork and project-based learning.

Activity 1: The daily attendance of the online lecture series on the topic of Coronavirus through the EDRAK educational platform presented by Dr Adeeb , and the students recorded and wrote notes. We had a good time discussing and asking questions. This would enhance the process of making meaning for students and searching for knowledge, in addition to writing what was discussed and asking questions .

The second activity: Allowing students to express their feelings and write their reflection during this period through self-reflection, drawing, expression, colors, and others.

The third activity: collecting all the information, images and reflections obtained from the first and second activities and designing an intellectual cultural awareness brochure about the virus. It is considered a visible product ( Artifact) containing students' ideas, words, images, and reflections. The idea of a brochure came to our mind because there is no clear brochure for this disease. The Ministry of Health usually publishes brochures for various diseases, but because the virus is new and rapidly spreading, there are no clear sources.

The plan of the previous three activities was organized and arranged step by step according to the time required, and the brochure was an integrated successive work. Every day, students listen to a fifteen-minute lecture about the Coronavirus, presented by a specialist doctor, on the Edraak platform. What about the virus, its method of transmission, the symptoms that appear on the infected person, how to prevent, treat, and others. Then add their various drawings and pictures that fit the topic of the lecture and reflections. “Every student carries with herself patterns of thinking, feeling and potential acting that were learned through their lifetime

https://www.flipsnack.com/maramfaqusa/1.html?fbclid=IwAR2sOLsZz5exTIH_mOHkGfV7AefYb4C4LBp7P2L4Mq6RdGicKGMr6eKVhA4

in the coming days. I am very grateful and thankful to be a part of the education above all association. I appreciate having such a generous scholarship from the EAA.AQB. First, the ENTEC Program gave us the chance as mentees to get benefited from our special mentor Ihab Abu-Dheibeh. We attended a total of twenty hours of meetings with Mr. Ihab as he helped us in many subjects that we needed advice on. Second, I joined the conversation club during the last year, and I gave some classes to the new students at the AQB. Third, I was very pleased to attend different online sessions including different subjects that helped us in the learning process such as How to Avoid Plagiarism, the national library of Qatar, Cryptocurrencies, Qatar’s history and culture, and different useful subjects in the educational field. Finally, I am planning a project that will play an important role in doing something for the society in which is developing the speaking skills of several grades students with the help of the Applied Linguistics Center in Ramallah. These are combined sessions planned for the month of March. As well as that I got the chance through all of these activities and experiences to develop myself as a teacher and to enhance my students in many aspects.

I will send invitations to all students' parents and other local people to attend the ceremony . The main aim is to convince the parents that their students have many talents and education is so interesting; not as the thought that it is boring. Second, I sent an invitation to one of our neighbor schools ( AL-Derrat Co-educational Basic School ) to play with my colleagues a football match that all will watch By God willing.the match will be on May. I invited AL-DWhat shall we do ?1- I planned all its activities with the help of my students and one of my colleagues, Nawaf who is the school educational counselor. I thought I would start with giving classes in the motivation concept for the teachers in my school, in order for them to get better learning results. Not only that but to get the best out of our students because I know that they can do better if they had more chances. I took advantage of the time we spent at the school during our students final exams. We spend two to three hours after the students finish their exams, so I though why not do something useful for the community we are in. I recognized that into only I can benefit my colleagues, but they have opened my eyes to more methods that could benefit both me and my classmates.

I accompanied my colleague the leader of the scout group and twelve children from the members of the scout group to some families near the school, who have some fields of olive trees to help them in picking up the olive trees fruit. During this season I'm working on planting the garden of the school . I have asked the children to bring some flowers, plants and some trees to plant them in the garden . By participating in ENTEC, I hope to improving my performance and achievement as a student in MAT program. My civic engagement is treatment of the weakness students in basic skills in English language. In fact, I have chosen this kind of civic engagement because I noticed that many students have problems in English skills, specially reading one. I started with my student Adam to improve his reading, I designed specific plan and organised activities, exercises, to develop his performance. Finally, I'm very happy with this activity with my student, I want to work with other students to achieve excellent outcomes in English language skills with my community, specially in my school.

Being aware of the environment is important because of the increasing environmental challenges the world is experiencing. The earlier students learn about the environment, the sooner they’ll be able to contribute to safeguarding it. This project aims at raising awareness of the environmental problems and trying to find solutions, starting from our school environment.

This was accomplished through lectures, recycling, planting, and teaching students how to use AI to solve environmental problems. Outcomes from this project were that students were able to talk about the environment and its problems and suggested solutions, they also designed brochures and videos about the environment and made some projects using scratch and AI. The lessons students learn in school and the activities they make at school can benefit the broader community if they share their environmental knowledge with their friends and family.

I started this project two months ago. At first, I have some concerns regarding making changes in students’ behaviors toward the environment. But I believe that if we as teachers tend to make some changes in students’ behaviors, we surely can. Students were excited and interested in each activity I made with them. From these activities, they showed passion to learn how technology, especially AI, has the potential to accelerate global efforts to protect the environment

I learned from this experience that each one of us can make a change if we find suitable support. I have been always one of the environment lovers, but this project added leadership skills to me where I worked with almost 100 students from 10th Grade. Also, I gained more information about the environment, and now I believe that raising awareness of environmental issues is key to keeping sustainable living at the forefront of people’s minds, but also an opportunity to educate students and spread the word to help protect nature. Would you like to be a hero too?!

The second project that I worked on was related to bullying. I did this project with 9th graders on a Friday; a school-off day. I chose to do this project because a lot of students are either subject to bullying or are bullies themselves. I also wanted to improve the students’understanding of bullying, the harm of bullying, and strategies for responding to bullying.

We started by watching the movie “wonder” which tells the story of August, a boy with a rare facial abnormality, entering the fifth grade in a private school where he befriends Jack. The two form a strong bond while facing the bullies in their class. After watching the movie, I did a PowerPoint presentation explaining what bullying is, the dangers of bullying, the effects it has on the bullied, the bully, and the bystanders.

I hope that my students now can understand and learn what bullying is and crimes associated with bullying, the harm that results from bullying, what they can do if they are being bullied and what they can do if they know someone is being bullied.

This project is personal to me because when I was my students’ age, I have witnessed bullying and been bullied myself. Bullying is an issue that affects all teenagers and adults at times in the whole world. It is a very serious problem to the point that there must be a raise of awareness towards it.

When I started the project, I was concerned that my students would not take the bullying problem seriously, but I was surprised with some of the stories that came up. A couple of my students shared their stories of being bullied by their classmates and other school students. One girl showed me her cut arm, which was a result of her bullying suffering.

Bullying has often been dismissed as a normal part of growing up, and bullying and the harm that it causes are seriously underestimated. So, my goal was to make sure that my students understood the dangers of being a bully, or a bystander.

Since our kids don’t have opportunities to practice English language except inside the classrooms, they assume that English is really difficult. Consequently they achieve low marks in this subject at their schools. Tala, Hiba and Ibrahim, as scholars at Bard college, believe that it is our responsibility to change this stereotype and try to make a difference. Thus, we arranged with the administration of Excellence Center, one of the key language centers in Hebron, to organize some fun days with the kids. This voluntary work will include interactive activities, such as educational games, singing, competitions, presentations, field tours and food days communicating using English language. These activities will be held on several sessions. Doing this will break the ice and help those poor kids to utilize this magnificent tool (English Language) to have a brighter future. Furthermore, this will definitely provide us with a great opportunity to conduct real authentic activities away from the restrictions of the curricula and close the gap by building a bridge between the classrooms and the real world.

We can have fun and explore our interests and passions through volunteering. I work in a remote school, students there are not care about school So that we decided to start a voluntary week in our school We collaborated to do it perfectly. Me, my colleagues, the 10th and the 11th grades worked together in that. We did many things. First, we cleaned the library, tidied the books, and brought new ones. Second, we planted some trees, we invited people from the Ministry of education to share in that. We cleaned up around the school. neighbors, parents shared us in that.
And because I like drawing, we painted murals on the school walls, during this activity we gave the chance to the disabled students to color the murals with us. You can’t imagine their happy feelings during doing that. This work was prepared last December, about two hours a day. That was very nice when I saw the students working with their parents inside the school. This works like a bond for holding the community together, and it makes the students develop their communication skills

My civic engagement project consists of three parts.
The first part is a partnership with my fellow teacher Mahmoud Abu Ras, we were requesting an interactive board for our school for a long time and finally, our school received one very recently, our work was on helping in preparing the showroom for the interactive board my colleague and I helped in the painting job and the cleaning of the room since it was a storage room for old broken chairs.
The new showroom will highly benefit our students since it will make a dramatic change in the traditional teaching methods that students have used to for a long time. we are very excited about this project because we think it will greatly influence our students and motivate them to do better and improve their academic situation.
As for my second project, in the coming months, I am planning to take some of my students and engage them in a community work event. The plan I have in mind is to paint our school's wall white since it is the first thing that visitors see when they come to our school, such a work will increase the teamwork spirit in my students and their sense of responsibility towards their community. On the other hand, I feel that this step will strengthen the bond between students and their teachers.
The third part of my project is on a personal level, and it comes from the noticeable weakness I see in some of my students in the English language, so I aim to choose some of the students who truly try in class and do their best effort to be successful and help them outside of school on my own time and without any financial rewards or fees to help them become better and stronger in their English subjects and English as a second language in general.
I think doing this will positively influence my students' self-esteem by letting them know that they are not alone and that the teacher is noticing the effort they put in learning and such a gesture would be highly appreciated by them, and perhaps inspire them to help others as they were helped.

As a first step, it will then be available for all grade levels.
The idea of this work stemmed from an attempt by me to address the phenomenon of transforming education into a material and commercial product, and after the widespread phenomenon of private lessons for a fee.
Where I will work to provide a source of knowledge available to everyone and free of charge.

I chose to participate in the Enhanced Network Teacher Education Capacity (ENTEC) at AQB as a mentee. I worked with an experienced MAT graduate who is also a supervisor in training. Ms. Nadia Jaber has sufficient experience in my field, Mathematics. Throughout this journey, I had a lot to learn from her in order to improve my teaching techniques. The most effective aspect of this project, in my opinion, is the development of our teaching skills to benefit students, because our students are the center of the educational process. We recorded our class lecture and then discussed the advantages and disadvantages during our meeting. This discussion helped us solve educational and pedagogical problems of practice in both the classroom setting and the online environment. At the start of this project, I was concerned about managing my time to attend the online meetings that we were required to attend, but Miss Nadia provided us with some time management tips that were extremely beneficial. Also, I have been teaching math for about 9 years and thought I had enough knowledge to deal with students, but after participating in the MAT program and the ENTEC project, I am convinced that we do learn something new every day. My attitudes toward education are shifting. I begin to adapt new teaching methods to meet the needs of my students. To summarize, I am now completely convinced that "There is only one way to change the world; change yourself.”

Ms. Nadia Jaber was my mentor, she is an expert supervisor in math and its teaching methods. My reason to participate in this workshop is according to this convince: “If you want to have great and good students as a teacher, you must first try to be a good teacher”. Also, I chose to participate in this program to acquire Ms. Nadia experience and reflet it on my students to benefit them most possibly. Ms. Nadia create a WhatsApp group to facilitate the management of our meetings. she discussed many things that we needed to, such as methods of teaching math, methods of dealing with some situations in the classroom. She asked us to record two videotaped classes to give us professional feedback. For the first class, I sent her the recording then she discussed all the details and she gave me better alternatives for some points that I need to work on. For the second one, she asked me to join an online math class for the 8th grade through the Teams program. The most thing that I learned from her was how to use every minute of the class to benefit the students. After joining this program, I felt that there is no stopping point for improvement for many aspects whether it is personal, academic skills, and professional. I hope for more! In the end, I want to thank everyone who provides me with this chance.

Recently I’ve started giving courses to the students about robotics and how to code.

When we think of robots in education, we often think of them as machines that do the work that teachers couldn’t or shouldn’t do. But the reality is that robots can be used to teach all kinds of subjects, from math and science to language and history. They can be used to engage students in lessons that would be too difficult or boring for humans to learn or teach, and they can be used to provide extra help when teachers aren’t around. And when used in this way, robots have the potential to increase the quality of education that students receive and to help close the achievement gap that exists between students of different backgrounds and socioeconomic circumstances.

My civic engagement project is giving robotics courses for students and teachers in other schools. The first thing that I thought about was how can I help my school's students with my knowledge and new experiences whether I teach them.
I thought of applying these workshops to the school where I work because I felt grateful to the principal and my colleagues for their support and constant encouragement to me to study at Bard College. So, this was the reason for choosing the field of civic engagement.
I selected students of different ages and classes. The group consisted of the sixth, fifth, and some of them were fourth-graders. The methods and pedagogies that I learned from the MAT program helped me, and it facilitated my work.
Actually, I did not put an action plan, but I was looking for the main problems that every student suffers from in learning English. Some of them face the problem of distinguishing between letters such as (b,d ), and others cannot pronounce the letter "c" in different words if it must pronounce //s// or //k//, and other problems related to reading and writing skills.
I worked with the students at the same time but in different methods. For example, I started with the first problem with all of them, whether they suffer from it or not. I wanted to avoid embarrassment and break their stress.
Initially, I faced some problems. As their lack of self-confidence, their belief that their abilities are limited, and the most important of which was their lack of awareness of the importance of solving these problems.
I treated small parts of these problems, but not completely. I need more time to fix everything, the problems that I mentioned before seem simple, but during the workshops, I realized that they are not.
I will not stop because I have completed the 10 hours required of me. I want to continue to help students who have problems with their studies. There is nothing better than seeing others happy and grateful to you.

Being a part of AQB college is a blessing for many reasons that contributed to creating a better version of me. EAA-Qatar Scholarship is one of the reasons as it doesn’t only support us financially to pursue our academic dream, but it also requires us to be effective members in the society we live in. Although the requirements of any scholarship may be regarded as burdensome, the civic engagement requirement of EAA is highly appreciated. The mere essence of it is to develop our social skills while achieving an academic or social utility.

Last semester, fall 2021, and as a member of the English language subject committee at North Hebron Directorate, I participated in leading workshops for novice English teachers. I led two workshops, the first one was about “how to teach the listening skill”, and the second one was about “how to teach the reading skill”. And each one was for 3 hours. My main goal from this participation was to share some of the Knowledge that I’ve learned throughout my journey in the MAT program. I shared the beliefs and ideas that I shaped as an ambitious learner in each course and workshop I enrolled in.

The reflections from the teachers were greatly satisfying. Many of them appreciated the theoretical side of the workshop just as much as the practical side and the teaching strategies. Being in those workshops with other teachers gave me the opportunity to learn from their experiences. Moreover, having my English supervisor there, I took her valuable and constructive notes into consideration for improving myself as a workshop leader. For that reason, I consider that experience a personal one for me. In all of its stages I learned and benefited greatly. My skills and knowledge improved while preparing, presenting, discussing and finally getting my colleagues and supervisor’s feedback.

Right before the workshops, I was quite nervous as I’ve never led a workshop for other teachers in the directorate before. However, I’m really grateful for this experience as it revealed that side of my personality that loves to share valuable and essential information that leads to better teaching experience.

I did not stop there. After the workshops, I seized every chance to share with my colleagues any effective strategy or method that I came across. I believe that this is what civic engagement is all about. Being a constructive member of a group requires sharing knowledge, supporting each other, and always being thirsty for learning how to thrive together.

I am thankful to EAA Qatar scholarship because it gave me this chance to improve my skills and make my teaching more authentic and effective.

As part of my scholarship, I have had to do some voluntary work to benefit as much students as I can. Actually, I have started working to help my students overcome their difficulties in reading comprehension. I have learned so far, many strategies and practices that might help my students in inferring the meaning and connecting ideas while reading. I have conducted two short meetings weekly; each one lasts for twenty minutes for my seventh-grade students, students have to read a short passage and then apply one strategy to help them in reading comprehension. One of these meetings is face to face and we usually do it in their break while the other one is done online.

Students voluntarily enroll in this reading class. I even accepted other students from other sections. Students have told me that working in those meetings are more fun as they are not forced to take any exams and as they work freely with their friends. Honestly speaking, I didn’t expect that some students’ academic performance would improve, especially in reading comprehension. I intend to benefit from the strategies and the methods that really have helped my students and thus include them in my curriculum plan for the next year.

Hello, I'm Lina Saad, and this semester, as part of my civic engagement program, I tried to improve the appearance of my school where I teach by planting roses and seedlings in the school garden with the help of the school children. Additionally, I gave a presentation to the parents in which I explained the nature of learning disabilities and how to deal with them.

My first civic engagement was to help one of my students in first grade, who didn’t know the alphabets. I taught him the letters and their sounds. I also taught him how to spell words. Wissam was happy to learn the alphabets, as his other classmates already knew the alphabets. This increased his trust in himself. Before starting with Wissam, I was afraid he won’t collaborate and he’ll get bored. However, things went smoothly and actually, I saw more confidence in his eyes.

My second civic engagement was to help in painting the school’s walls. My colleagues and I wanted students to feel more connected to school and to have a healthy school’s environment. Yes! We achieved this goal. The second day when we went back to school all of the students were happy and kept talking and asking about the paintings. In the recess, they sat in that area to have their lunch.

In July, I decided to join Ghirass Cultural Center in Bethlehem to do my civic engagement hours.I engaged some children from 7 to 12 years old in extra curriculum activities. For instance, On Mondays, they had story-telling sessions and gaming using flashcards on Tuesdays. Really, children were excited and enthusiastic as well as their parents who showed admiration and appreciation of such activities in the center; they touched their kids waiting my activities eagerly.
Moreover, during story-telling sessions , children had the chance to retell thd story handled despite the individualdifferencesobstacle. In addition, I did my best to vary in vocabulary games using flashcards, such as , the missing card, miming, whispering and guessing. It was helpful to keep attention and suspense .Furthermore, the children had led some games as groups in a competitive way. Actually, teaching foreign language through gaming is more beneficial and motivating. Honestly, I got benefit through acquiring new techniques in story-telling sessions.
