I will create a series of close-up, detailed drawings that reflect the artistic beauty that musical instruments posses. I will unify each piece by using black and white charcoal to emphasize the variety of values, textures, and shapes that this collection of diverse instruments has.

Music has always played a large role in my life by offering me a mode of relaxation and enjoyment in which I can express myself. However, as I aged and matured, I began to notice and appreciate the unique beauty of the musical instruments as works of art themselves. While these instruments can all produce a completely different kind of art, they themselves are all works of art.

This drawing of the scroll on a cello illuminates the unique beauty of the carved wood on this instrument. I used heavy darks in the background of the room to contrast the bright highlights that are along the edges of the scroll. Again, my use of overemphasized values works to express the reflective quality. The smooth texture of the wood was also created through my use of contrasting lights and darks, but the grain of the wood was not completely lost due to the subtle lines toward the bottom of the piece.

This is a drawing of the tuning pegs on the piano. The rougher texture of the fabric where the strings touch is emphasized by my energetic mark-making. I also attempted a blurring out effect towards the back of the picture in order to create a focal point and put emphasis on the first few rows of pegs.

This piece is my least favorite as of yet.

I used values and texture to emphasize the main two components of this piece. For the bells, I juxtaposed very dark, black spaces with bright white highlights in order to create the reflective qualities of the metal of the bells.

The wooden handle of the instrument had a very interesting texture that was hard to recreate. The portion of the handle that is closest to the viewer is blurred or faded out in order to create an angled view, which differs from the previous drawings in my concentration which have mostly been straight-on shots.

The upper right hand corner of the piece, and some of the handle needs to be revised and refined further.

This piece emphasizes the intricate and detailed aspects of the flute. While this shot is very up-close, there is still a significant amount of detail. Stark white highlights among a primarily dark piece work to create visual flow by drawing the eye from one highlight to the next. The variation between geometric shapes such as the straight lines and triangles, and the more organic shapes such as the circular keys and more fluid curves of the flute draw the eye through the piece as well.
