When Sherry Turkle said on her talk Connected, but alone: “We expect more from technology and less from each other” and “We’re smitten with technology” that spoke volume. I will not hide the fact that I turn into a baby throwing a fit when my phone is taken away from me, upon realizing that, I felt ashamed of myself. After watching Sherry Turkle’s talk, there’s this question that came through my mind, ‘who’s still in control – Is it still us? Or is technology ruling over us?’

There were a lot of things that Sherry Turkle have said that caught my interest, one is when she said ‘We’re getting used to a new way of being alone together,’ that made different scenarios that I face everyday come rushing to my mind. For instance, when eating together with my friends or family, each of us would be holding a phone, yes we talk, but I have noticed that we spend more time typing on our screen. Maybe that is the reason why we are not alarmed by how much time we spend on our gadgets because everyone is too busy to take notice.

Yes, technology has made significant changes in our daily lives and it made things easier for us. Technology is so useful, entertaining and it makes everything seem possible to make. Who would not want the idea that even if we are far from each other, we can still keep in touch as if we are really with that person? But what happens to the person next to us? Are we not going to reach out or talk to them just because they are near us? Or is that person next to us, indulged with their own gadget as well? With all the new inventions introduced, we are starting to be dependent on technology that we lose our trust in each other. Like the sociable robots that Sherry have mentioned, that is made for companion, we seek comfort on technology because it understands us more, but I think people would understand us better if we would just let them and they are willing to do so. Technology really did make significant changes that helped the world to take a step forward but I personally think that it also made some people stumble back.
